SANTA FE Fire managers resumed firing operations Wednesday within the planning area of the Cueva Fire.
 
An expected decrease in monsoonal thunderstorms over the next week will bring warmer, drier weather. Anticipating these more favorable conditions, fire managers will continue to assess the terrain and values at risk within the planning area.

The Los Alamos Fire Department along with New Mexico Resuscitation Academy (RA) has announced that they are conducting two consecutive one-day Resuscitation Academies.
 
These full day RAs are Friday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 7 at the Santa Fe Community College, 6401 Richards Ave. in Santa Fe.

SANTA FE Favorable conditions Thursday gave fire crews the opportunity to complete an additional 150 acres of firing operations.

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) have determined that the lightning-caused Cueva Fire on the Coyote Ranger District will be managed to improve forest conditions and reduce the risk of high-severity wildfire in the future.

Today and through the weekend fire crews will take advantage of favorable weather conditions to implement firing operations to bring positive benefits to the landscape.

SANTA FE – Santa Fe County Manager Katherine Miller announced the hiring of Erik Litzenberg as the new County Fire Chief. Litzenberg, current City of Santa Fe Manager, brings more than 23 years of public service to the County.

“Erik’s passion for and proven leadership in the field of firefighting and emergency medical services is a welcome asset to the County,” Miller said. “We feel lucky to have him join our team in this capacity.”

Alamo Fire In Bandelier Grows To 40 Acres

A lightning-caused fire was reported Sunday afternoon in the Bandelier Wilderness.

The fire has been low, slowly creeping in the grass and occasionally torching individual juniper trees. Rain was received at the fire site Sunday evening and again early this morning.

SANTA FE – A drier-than-expected Monday gave fire crews the opportunity to resume firing operations and complete an additional 40 acres on the east side of the Conejos Fire.

The plan for today, Aug. 6, is to take advantage of a break in the weather to continue firing operations today and Wednesday as conditions allow to remove heavy concentrations of dead and down fuels within the Conejos Fire perimeter.

SFNF Monitors Another Lightning-Sparked Fire On Pecos/Las Vegas District

SANTA FE – Fire staff on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) are monitoring the lightning-caused Alamitos Fire near Forest Road (FR) 375, 2 miles north of the community of La Cueva within a previously treated fuel break.

While the monsoonal weather patterns are bringing a fair amount of moisture to the area, fire managers are considering strategically adding low-intensity fire to the ground to achieve significant benefits on the ground, including community protection, reduced risk of wildfire and improved forest health.

SANTA FE – Scattered thunderstorms in the Jemez Mountains over the weekend put a fair amount of moisture on the Conejos Fire, but not enough to extinguish it.

Fire managers released some of the resources assigned to the fire over the weekend.

The plan is to wait out the monsoonal weather patterns over the area now and, if the moisture is followed by a drying trend, resume firing operations later in the week to complete an 800-acre block.
