Prescribed Burn Set To Start In Gallinas Watershed

SANTA FE ― A prescribed burn in the Gallinas Watershed on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District may begin today. 
 
The decision to burn on Wednesday will be dependent on favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality, weather forecasts and available resources. 
 
The Gallinas Canyon prescribed burn is designed to improve and protect the Gallinas Watershed, the primary water source for the City of Las Vegas, by reducing the risk for high-intensity wildfire.

Prescribed Fire Training Planned In October On Bureau Of Land Management And State Trust Lands

PENASCO ― Taos BLM, the New Mexico State Land Office, The Nature Conservancy’s Fire Learning Network, and the Forest Stewards Guild are organizing a prescribed fire training exchange (TREX) to safely return fire to approximately 500 acres of ponderosa pine and piñon-juniper forests state trust and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands west of Peñasco.

Coyote Ranger District Plans Prescribed Burns

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Coyote Ranger District, Santa Fe National Forest, hope to take advantage of favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and forecasted weather, to conduct previously announced prescribed burns sometime between Sept. 26 and Dec. 31, 2017.
 
Fire managers are looking at three targets for fall burning on the Coyote District:
  • French Mesa treatment area, 5,041 acres located approximately 10 miles north of Gallina
  • Gallina Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) treatment area, 500 acres located 1 mile south

Prescribed Fire Planned In Gallinas Canyon

Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest plan to conduct a prescribed burn in Gallinas Canyon on the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District. The planned burn will include a combination of pile burning and broadcast burning.

The window for the Gallinas Canyon prescribed burn will open Sept. 28 and extend through Dec. 31, 2017. The decision to burn will be dependent on favorable conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality, weather forecasts, and available resources.

The 800-acre Gallinas Canyon treatment area is located approximately 20 miles west/southwest of Las Vegas. Read More

Falls Leading Cause Of Death For NM Seniors

Los Alamos Fire Department recognized National Falls Prevention Day, Sept. 22, by offering suggestions to people over 65 on how to prevent injury or death from falls, according to Donna McHenry of the Emergency Medical Services Division.

McHenry said of all the places where fall-related deaths occurred, the home had the highest rates of occurrence. She suggested that people over 65 assess their homes with the help of a family member or friend if needed and make the usually minor changes needed to reduce their risk of falling.

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) continue to manage the lightning-caused Ojitos Fire on the Coyote Ranger District and the Deer Creek Fire on the Jemez Ranger District by using low-intensity fire on the ground to achieve multiple resource benefits.
