The Los Alamos Fire Department is recognizing Sept. 22, National Falls Prevention Day, by offering suggestions to people over 65 on how to prevent injury or death from falls, according to Donna McHenry of the Emergency Medical Services Division.

Adult falls are the leading cause of death and hospitalization for New Mexico residents over the age of 65. Deer Creek Fire On Jemez Ranger District To Be Managed For Resource Benefit

SANTA FE ― Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) plan to manage the lightning-caused Deer Creek Fire on Peggy Mesa by using low-intensity fire on the ground to achieve multiple resource benefits.
 
The Deer Creek Fire started Sept. 15 on Peggy Mesa in the old San Diego prescribed burn area and adjacent to the site of this summer’s lightning-caused Peggy Fire. Objectives for managing the Deer Creek Fire include:

Smoke Visible From Three Fires On SFNF

SANTA FE ― Three lightning-caused fires on the Santa Fe National Forest put up visible smoke Saturday as crews keep an eye on the Beaver Creek, Deer Creek and Ojitos Fires.
 
The Ojitos Fire on the Coyote Ranger District started July 7 in a 90,000-acre block that has been cleared under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) for forest restoration.

LAFD Starts Annual Hydrant Testing Monday

LAFD News:

The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) will be testing fire hydrants throughout Los Alamos County beginning Monday through mid-November.

The purpose of hydrant testing is to ensure that they will provide an adequate water supply for fire suppression and to flush out sediments that have accumulated in the water distribution system over the past year. These tests are part of the regular hydrant maintenance program and are done in conjunction with the Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities (DPU).

Two Cars Crash Near Los Alamos High School

The drivers of two vehicles that crashed during this evening’s commute at the intersection of Diamond Drive and Sandia were transported with minor injuries to Los Alamos Medical Center. Police at the scene indicated that the red car turned left from Sandia onto Diamond Drive and collided with the blue BMW.
