Fire Near Los Pinos Spurs Evacuations

FIRE News:

The smokey conditions in Los Alamos today are caused by the Cajete Fire, currently burning in the Los Pinos area of the Jemez Mountains. The fire is near Mile Marker 33 on NM 4. The Forest Service and Sandoval County Emergency Management are currently fighting the fire.

According the U.S. Forest Service, smoke was first reported to Santa Fe Dispatch at 10:47 a.m. today. An stimated at 100 acres and spreading and moving to the east. The cause of this fire is unknown at this time.  Read More

Local Smoky Haze Caused By Fire In Bonita Canyon

Smoky haze from a lightning-sparked fire 19 miles north of El Rito in Bonita Canyon fills the sky this morning looking east from the Main Hill Road. The wildfire reported June 3, increased in size to approximately 280 acres, driven by wind and dry air. It is burning in a remote area of the El Rito Ranger District of the Carson National Forest. SFNF: Report It … Don’t Ignore It

SFNF News:

EL RITO — Each year the El Rito Ranger District hosts thousands of visitors between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Unfortunately, a small number of these visitors behave badly and cause big problems for the forest. Fire prevention patrols in the forest find abandoned or unattended campfires almost every day.

Abandoned campfires are the leading human cause of wildfire. Every large wildfire begins as a small fire. In 2011 the Wallow wildfire in Arizona burned 522,000+ acres. One small campfire left unattended burned an area 28 miles by 28 miles.

Another Rough Weekend On The Jemez Ranger District

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – Sometimes called the Albuquerque metropolitan area’s “backyard” because of its proximity to the state’s largest city, the Jemez Ranger District on the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) hosts thousands of visitors on any given weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends.

Unfortunately, a small minority of those visitors can cause huge problems for the forest. Once again, fire prevention patrols on the Jemez District found 13 abandoned or unattended campfires this past weekend.

LAFD Cadets Cleaning Up At Overlook Park Monday

The Los Alamos Fire Department Cadet Class #27 will be doing a community project at Overlook Park in White Rock on Monday, June 12 beginning at 9 a.m., and ending later in the afternoon the same day.
 
The class will be doing a general clean-up of trash and conducting wildland fire mitigation. The activities are being conducted to enhance the safety of the area in preparation for the upcoming July 4th fireworks display sponsored annually by the Los Alamos Kiwanis Club.

Family Safe After Lightning Strikes Home

A lightning strike Tuesday evening at the home of Leo and Clare Webber on Los Pueblos Road evening caused substantial damage but the couple escaped without injury.

The Los Alamos Fire Department received a call of the strike about 9:30 p.m. and dispatched several units to the scene. During the same time frame, LAFD also responded to a fire alarm at the Los Alamos County Eco Station on East Jemez Road.

Scenes From Lightning Strike At Los Pueblos Home

Los Alamos Firefighters at the scene of this evening’s lightning strike at a home on Los Pueblos. Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes told the Los Alamos Daily Post this evening that everyone in the home got out without injury. He said the fire is now out, adding that the home has sustained some damage due to the fire that broke out in the attic from the lightning strike and investigators are on scene.
