State Issues Smoke Advisory For Southwestern New Mexico In Wake Of Trout And Buck Fires

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Departments of Health and Environment issued a smoke advisory for communities affected by the Trout Fire in the Silver City area and the Buck Fire near Aragon.

Pending further notice, the advisory is in effect in Grant and Catron counties.

Smoke from the Buck Fire may be visible from Highway 12 southeast of the community of Aragon and southwest of Highway 60. The Trout Fire, north of Silver City, is expected to continue moving north and east, depending on wind direction and other weather conditions. Santa Fe National Forest Rescinds Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) leadership decided to lift Stage 1 Fire Restrictions across the forest, effective at 8 a.m. June 6.

This decision was influenced by several factors that significantly reduced fire risk in the area.

  • Consistent rainfall throughout May and into June;
  • A precipitation outlook indicating above-normal levels for northern New Mexico;
  • Fuel moisture levels that are wetter than average for this time of year;

Summary Of Council-Adopted $368 Million FY26 Budget

 On April 23, the Los Alamos County Council adopted a $367.9 million budget for fiscal year (FY) 2026, representing a $9.6 million decrease from the previous year’s $377.5 million budget.

A two-page summary of the adopted budget is outlined in the “Budget in Brief FY 2026,” which can be accessed online at https://lacnm.com/Budget. The full FY 2026 Adopted Budget Book is scheduled for publication in August.

The overall reduction from FY 2025 is due to a combined $38.7M decrease across two funds:

Firefighters And Air Support Respond To Camp Fire Near Fort Stanton Historic Site

Sunday afternoon, May 25, firefighters and air support responded to the Camp Fire within the Fort Stanton area. The area affected by the fire is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area) and the State of New Mexico, Department of Cultural Affairs (Fort Stanton Historic Site).
