Los Alamos County Enters Stage 1 Fire Restrictions

COUNTY News:

Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has enacted fire restrictions to Stage 1 effective May 4, within the boundaries of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts. 

Under the Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Order 25-01, stringent restrictions and conditions are imposed as follows:

SANTA FE — Due to elevated wildfire risk, the Santa Fe National Forest will implement Stage 1 Fire Restrictions forest-wide beginning Sunday, May 4, 2025, until September 30, 2025.

The decision to implement fire restrictions is based on various factors, including the availability of firefighting resources, current drought conditions, weather forecast, the time of year, and fuel moisture levels. The Los Alamos Historical Society has announced its upcoming lecture, a free event 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 13 in the Pajarito Room at Fuller Lodge. Author Tom Ribe will speak on the 25th anniversary of the Cerro Grande Fire.

Ribe is a writer and environmental advocate based in northern New Mexico. He is the author of Inferno by Committee: A History of the Cerro Grande Fire, which offers a compelling and meticulously researched account of the prescribed burn that turned into one of the most destructive wildfires in New Mexico history.

Los Alamos County officials invite the public to a Community Appreciation event honoring Fire Chief Troy Hughes noon to 2 p.m. Friday, April 25 at Fuller Lodge, his final day with the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD).

The event will celebrate Chief Hughes’ 14 years of dedicated service to the community before he relocates to South Dakota to begin his new position as Fire Chief for the Brookings Fire Department.

Plans Progress On New Los Alamos Fire Station #4

The design for the new Los Alamos Fire Station #4 is getting more defined. The station will replace the existing facility at the same location, 4401 Diamond Drive.

Project Manager Sobia Sayeda reported Thursday that the preliminary design was concluded in March and work is now focused on schematic design.

She explained that while conducting the preliminary design, the site was evaluated, easements looked at and an initial geo-technological report was done. Read More
