After an unbearable struggle for nearly a year with a wound that would not heal, Los Alamos resident Tom McHenry lost all hope and asked doctors to amputate his foot.

“I couldn’t take it anymore … I just wanted it to be over,” said McHenry, who moved to Los Alamos from Valparaiso, Ind., with his wife in 2012, just after the Las Conchas Fire.

He had been diagnosed a diabetic in 2010 when doctors

The fire, caused by lightning, is creeping through pine needles and surface fuels, occasionally flaring up in jackpots of dead and downed wood; the entire fire area is in a portion of the preserve’s forest that had been thinned over Read More

NMSF: Lightning And Fire

NMSF News:

SILVER CITY – Thunderstorms across much of the Gila National Forest produced significant lightning with just isolated areas receiving appreciable rainfall. Firefighters were kept busy responding to 22 new fire starts.

Fire is a natural part of the ecosystem and each new start represents an opportunity to restore or maintain natural conditions, removing hazardous fuels and reducing the potential of future catastrophic wildfires.

While all fires are actively managed not all are immediately suppressed. Fire managers assess each new start and develop a management strategy Read More

Filming At Pajarito Mountain Producing Smoke – No Fire

COUNTY News:

Do not be alarmed if smoke appears to be coming directly from Pajarito Mountain this week. It is a special effect for a scene simulating a wildland fire for “Granite Mountain,” a motion picture based on the real-life Granite Mountain Hotshots, an elite group of wildland firefighters that courageously battled one of the worst wildfires in history to save an Arizona town.

“Granite Mountain” will be on location at Pajarito Mountain through Wednesday, June 29.
