Public To Receive 24-Hour Notice Of Prescribed Burns

SFNF News:

SANTA FE – The Santa Fe National Forest will provide 24-hour notice to the public before commencing the previously announced prescribed burn in the lower portion of the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed. 

Unpredictable spring weather has made it difficult to schedule ignition on 844 acres within the project area. The advance notice will advise the public, including smoke-sensitive individuals who may need to take precautionary measures, that conditions are optimal to proceed.

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest hope to take advantage of a window between weather systems to conduct a previously announced prescribed burn in the lower portion of the Santa Fe Municipal Watershed May 7-22.

Monday marks the 15th anniversary of the Cerro Grande Fire.

The disastrous fire began as a controlled burn, and became uncontrolled due to high winds and drought conditions. More than 400 families in Los Alamos lost their homes in the resulting 48,000-acre fire. Structures at Los Alamos National Laboratory were also destroyed or damaged but there was no loss of human life. Several volunteers helped work the event and Los Alamos Firefighters also assisted and placed ribbons on athletes at the conclusion of their events.
