The 4th annual Piñon Elementary PTO Fun Run Saturday, March 21 was a great success.

The annual event promoted a morning of family fun, friendship and fitness for both the families at Piñon and the community. Runners and walkers of all abilities were welcomed to enjoy a fun, fast and scenic run benefiting Piñon School.

2014 Pino Fire Recognized For Innovative Strategy, Ecosystem Benefits

SANTA FE ― The Southwest Fire Science Consortium named the Pino Fire on the Santa Fe National Forest the 2014 “Incident of the Year” for lightning-caused fire in the Southwest. 
 
The 4,313-acre Pino Fire was cited for the innovative suppression strategy that focused on long-term benefits to the landscape and ecosystem.

As wildfire season begins, residents are urged to attend an informational event called “Wildfire 2015” 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4 in Fuller Lodge.

The event is sponsored by the Los Alamos Fire Department, in partnership with several local agencies:

BEFORE: The Los Alamos Fire Department hosted its third annual St. Baldricks head shaving fundraiser to help fight childhood cancer, Tuesday at Fuller Lodge. The Los Alamos Fire Department is hosting its third annual St. Baldricks head shaving fundraiser to help fight childhood cancer.

The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 at Fuller Lodge. LAFD also is selling special LAFD T-shirts for the event, donated by the Local 3279 Firefighters Union – click here.

Pile Burn Planned On Virgin Mesa Near Jemez

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest are continuing a prescribed pile burn on the Jemez Ranger District this week.

The Virgin Mesa prescribed burn may be conducted through March 31, if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, are favorable. 

The Virgin Mesa prescribed pile burn is 450 acres in an area one mile west of Jemez Springs and eight miles north of the communities of Gilman and Cañon. Small blocks may be treated each day to decrease the daily smoke volume.

SANTA FE – Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest plan to continue the La Jara prescribed pile burns on the Cuba Ranger District this week.

The La Jara prescribed pile burns, a remaining total of 56 acres, may continue through March 30, only if conditions, including fuel moisture levels, air quality and weather forecasts, are favorable. Small blocks may be treated each day to decrease the daily smoke volume.
