Watershed Rx Burn Three Miles East/Northeast of Santa Fe Underway

SFNF News:

Fire managers are burning 35 acres of slash piles today in the Santa Fe watershed, approximately three miles east/northeast of Santa Fe. 

Ignition started at 9:30 this morning and operations are going well. Eighteen firefighters are on site to assist with the burn and to monitor smoke. The purpose of this prescribed fire is to reduce forest fuels, enhance watershed protection and promote forest health.

Smoke will be visible from Santa Fe, Tesuque, Highway I-25, as well as U.S. 84/285. Smoke impacts may occur in the upper Canyon Road area this evening.

Los Alamos Firefighters Extinguish Chimney Fire

Los Alamos firefighters doused a chimney fire that ignited late this afternoon at a home in the 2300 block of 35th Street.

“We had multiple reports of heavy smoke in the area at about 5 p.m., and when crews arrived, they saw that a chimney was on fire,” Deputy Chief Justin Grider said. “Our firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to the rest of the house.”

Upcoming Santa Fe National Forest Prescribed Burns

SANTA FE—Fire managers on the Santa Fe National Forest plan to conduct several prescribed fires across the forest over the next few weeks to reduce hazardous fuels, provide community protection, and restore forest health.

The start dates and duration of the burns are subject to change depending on favorable conditions. Through hand ignition firefighters will burn slash piles and conduct broadcast burns (burning surface fuels in a mosaic pattern.) Smoke may be visible intermittently through the coming weeks.

Los Alamos Fire Chief Troy Hughes has successfully completed the process that awards him the professional designation of “Chief Fire Officer” (CFO.)

The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) met Dec. 3 to officially confer the designation upon Hughes. He is one of only 944 CFOs worldwide.

Los Alamos Fire Capt. Wendy Servey has been awarded a scholarship from the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation to attend the Tampa 2 Fire Safety Summit.  The scholarship will provide Servey with conference registration fees, airfare, and lodging, so that she may attend the summit March 10-12 in Tampa, Fla.
