San Juan Prescribed Burn Scheduled in Jemez Ranger District

SFNF News:

Next week if conditions are favorable, fire managers plan to begin the 7,300 acre San Juan prescribed burn 3-5 miles northeast of Jemez Springs. 

Approximately 2,500 acres are expected to be treated each day.

Prescribed burning is the managed application of fire to wildland fuels (woody material) under specified conditions, within predetermined boundaries in an effort to reduce hazardous fuels, provide community protection and restore forest health.

The burn area is 4-8 miles northwest of the community of Ponderosa.

At 12:40 p.m. today, smoke was reported east of the Posse Lodge on North Mesa. Firefighters were on the scene a short time later and found a small fire burning in brush near the western edge of the North Mesa Stables.

Juveniles Ignite Fire Behind Manhattan Loop

LAPD News:

Two 12-year-old Los Alamos boys started a fire in the canyon behind Manhattan Loop at about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Los Alamos Firefighters doused the blaze and identified the two boys. Los Alamos Police met with the boys and referred them to the juvenile probation officer.

The boys apparently set some leaves on fire, which quickly spread to the surrounding ground cover, according to the police report.

Los Alamos Deputy Fire Chief Justin Grider said the fire scorched a 30 foot by foot area of land and that no structures were affected. Read More

Breaking News: Car Fire Near White Rock Y Blocks Traffic Earlier [Photos / Video]

At approximately 2:50 p.m. today,  Los Alamos Fire Department personnel responded to a vehicle fire near the White Rock Y close to the westbound-to-White Rock underpass. Video from the scene exclusive to the Los alamos Daily Post may be viewed below.

Espanola Ranger District to Start Santa Fe Watershed Prescribed Burn

ESPANOLA RANGER DISTRICT News

The Espanola Ranger District anticipates initiating a prescribed burn Tuesday, Oct. 2 approximately three miles east of Santa Fe. Total acreage to be treated over two days is 207 acres and will occur as conditions permit. Smoke will likely be seen from Santa Fe, Pecos, Jemez, Tesuque, Los Alamos, Bernalillo, Albuquerque, and Espanola.  The treatments are being implemented to help protect the municipal water supply by reducing hazardous fuels, as well as help sustain watershed, forest and wildlife health.

Firefighters Douse Small Brush and Debris Fire

At approximately 6:25 p.m. this evening, firefighters responded to a small brush fire behind the apartments at 3100 Trinity Dr., west of the Reel Deal Theater. Pine needles, a rug, notepaper and other debris were found burning at the scene. The fire was quickly extinguished and the cause of the fire is being investigated.

Valles Caldera Prescribed Burn Continues

VALLES CALDERA TRUST News:

Jemez Springs – The Valles Caldera Trust Tuesday continued a prescribed burn project on 360 acres south of New Mexico Highway 4 near Mile Marker 30. 

The project began with 70 acres burned Monday and will continue through Wednesday. Smoke from the burn periodically drifts across the highway and reduces visibility.

To ensure the safety of the public, fire managers are using pilot cars to escort vehicles through the burn area when conditions warrant.

Motorists may experience short delays when driving through the burn area.

Cebollita Fire Burning Three Miles West of La Cueva

JEMEZ RANGER DISTRICT News:

A fire was discovered today on the Jemez Ranger District three miles west of La Cueva.

Smoke from the Cebollita Fire is  visible to residents from La Cueva and Jemez Springs. Fuels on the ground are creating a fair amount of smoke.

The Cebollita Fire is at two acres and holding. An incident commander is on scene and two engines are enroute.
