Wildfire season has begun in New Mexico and the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) reminds residents of the increased risk of wildfires.

Presently the fire danger in Los Alamos is “High” and to enhance public safety and mitigate potential fire threats, LAFD urges all residents to review and act on the recommendations outlined in the “Ready, Set, Go! Wildland Fire Action Guide” – a comprehensive resource designed to prepare residents for the possibility of a wildfire.

New Mexico Governor Declares State Of Emergency In Lincoln County And Mescalero Apache Reservation Due To South Fork And Salt Wildfires

SANTA FE – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency today in Lincoln County and the Mescalero Apache Reservation and deployed additional National Guard to the area in response to the devastating South Fork Fire and Salt Fire.

These wildfires, which ignited yesterday, have damaged more than 500 structures and led to the evacuation of the entire Village of Ruidoso. Further evacuations in nearby communities are possible. The fires have consumed nearly 20,000 acres and are currently 0% contained.

South Fork Fire Forces Village Of Ruidoso Evacuation

Ruidoso OEM News:

An emergency mandatory GO evacuation was issued at 6:48 p.m. today for the entire Village of Ruidoso due to the South Fork Fire.

The Ruidoso Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is monitoring the fire burning on the Mescalero Apache reservation, approximately 2-3 miles from the Village of Ruidoso limits, specifically near the Upper Canyon area.

The South Fork Fire was first reported around 10:50 a.m. today and has now burned about 5,000 acres.

SFNF Fire Managers Suppressing Glorieta Wildfire

SFNF News:

Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) fire managers were notified of a new wildfire start this afternoon, named the Glorieta Wildfire in the Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District, southeast of Thompson Peak on La Cueva Ridge.

The cause of the wildfire is undetermined but there was lightning detected in the area from thunderstorm activity the last couple days.

Smoke may be visible from Glorieta, looking north on Interstate 25 and firefighters are focused on actively suppressing the wildfire.
