Santa Fe Community Foundation Awards $135,000 In Emergency Wildfire Relief Grants

SANTA FE — The Santa Fe Community Foundation (SFCF) has made three rounds of emergency wildfire relief grants through its Community Resiliency Fund totaling $135,000.

The grants, which the foundation has awarded weekly since the beginning of May, support nonprofit organizations in Mora and San Miguel counties that are providing critical services to families affected by the ongoing Calf Canyon/Hermit’s Peak wildfire.

The USDA Forest Service issued the following update today on the status of the Cerro Pelado Fire.

There will be warmer weather over the fire area today with sunny skies in the morning. There is zero percent chance of precipitation, and the maximum temperature will reach into the low 80’s.

Relative humidity will be in the low teens. Southwest winds are forecast. Fire behavior continues to be minimal across the fire area.

New Mexico Department Of Veterans Services Cancels Memorial Day Ceremony In Angel Fire

ANGEL FIRE —The New Mexico Department of Veterans Services (DVS) has canceled the scheduled Memorial Day ceremony May 30 at its Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire.

The decision was made out of concerns over the Calf Canyon/Hermits Peak wildfire in northern New Mexico, which started April 6 in nearby San Miguel County and continues to burn in the direction of Angel Fire and the Moreno Valley area.

More than 311,000 acres have been burned, and containment is at 40 percent.

The Forest Service (USFS) Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) assessment team coordinated early with US Geological Survey (USGS) staff during its evaluation of the Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon Fire burned area to strategically assess potential post-fire impacts to the watersheds and predicted debris flow response during damaging storm events.

The USDA Forest Service released the following update today on the Cerro Pelado Fire.

Temperatures will cool off a little today, with highs approaching 65 degrees and relative humidity staying in the double digits of 15-20 percent. Winds are forecast to be 5-17 mph gusting to 25 mph.

Fire behavior continues to be minimal but east of the fire there is a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon that could produce gusty outflow winds affecting the area.
