Panoramic View Near Overlook Park Of Smoke Plume From Hermits Peak And Calf Canyon Fire

A panoramic view of the smoke plume from the Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon combined fire taken Sunday near Overlook Park in White Rock. As of today, the fire has burned 298,060 acres, making it the largest wildfire in New Mexico history. Some 2,015 personnel are on site battling the blaze, which is 27 percent contained. The Hermits Peak Fire started from a prescribed burn and the Calf Canyon Fire is still under investigation. Cerro Pelado Fire conditions have improved, which means that Los Alamos County will return to the “Ready” stage of “Ready, Set, Go” Tuesday morning, May 17.

On The Job In Los Alamos: At North Mesa Stables

On the job in Los Alamos is Amy Rogers loading her horse Bert last Wednesday with assistance from friend Louis Schulte at the North Mesa Stables. Schulte estimated that 85 percent of the horses had been evacuated out of the stable area. Schulte, Meghan Ryan and Lisa Reader worked with the County Emergency Management Department to assist licensees to evacuate their animals off the hill when the Cerro Pelado Fire was barely contained.
