Letter To The Editor: Lauren Coupland Is The Strongest School Board Candidate

By the names listed below:

Lauren Coupland is the strongest candidate for School Board, District 3. She has the background, knowledge and understanding to be an effective and involved school board member, while adding a fresh perspective on a board where all other members are incumbents.

Lauren has hands-on classroom experience as a high school teacher working with non-traditional students who needed some out-of-the-box expertise to get to graduation. She has also been an active and involved LAPS parent since 2017. In addition, she has organized PTO events, volunteered in her children’s Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsing Lauren Coupland For District 3

By LISSIE HAM
Los Alamos

Lauren Coupland is my go-to for everything about our schools. I cannot count the number of times that I have thought “I need to ask Lauren about that” when it comes to questions related to education and the public school system.

Whether it is about a new state law that will impact schools, federal programs (like IDEA, IEPs, or any of a million other topics related to public school), I know that Lauren has already read up on the most current policies and has a deep understanding of the nuances involved. If she doesn’t know about what I’m looking for, she knows who I should contact Read More

Letter To The Editor: October War

By MARC BONEM
Santa Fe

I am distraught by calls for a cease-fire in the middle east. Who is this call to,  Israel? Hamas? Iran? Why isn’t there a call for a release of the hostages, some of whom are Americans? Why isn’t there a call for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, with a side commitment to justice?

What were Hamas’ goals when they started this war? (Yes, THEY started this war with an invasion, mass-murder of innocent civilians, and kidnappings.) Did they really expect to win? In the aftermath, with many civilian deaths in Palestine, has Hamas expressed any regrets or apologies?  Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Support Of Lauren Coupland For School Board

By SECILLI KEELER
Los Alamos

Disclaimer: I am speaking as a resident of Los Alamos and not as the Vice President of LAFSE or in my role as a Special Education Teacher for LAPS.

I am writing a letter in support of Lauren Coupland for school board. I have known Lauren in multiple capacities since 2018. She has always been a strong advocate for  students with disabilities. The knowledge that Lauren brings to the table as both a parent and an educator will be vastly different than any other candidate that is running for the position.

Lauren Coupland can meet the current needs of our schools. With their experience Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement For Christine Bernstein For School Board

By JONATHAN LATHROP
Los Alamos

I am part of a two-teacher family living in the Aspen school district. My wife and I have devoted a combined 56 years of service to this district and had two children challenged, educated, and loved by the staff at Aspen School. I wholeheartedly endorse Christine Bernstein as our representative on the school board and urge all in the Aspen district to get to the polls and vote for Christine.

While signs endorsing all three candidates for the board in our district are present, were one given a map of the homes of school employees in the district, he or she would find a “Bernstein” Read More

Letter To The Editor: Christine Bernstein Is District 3’s Number One Choice For Re-Election To LAPS Board!

By GREG JUERLING
Los Alamos

I am writing this letter of support for Christine Bernstein’s re-election as a LAPS school board member. Christine and I met four years ago while campaigning for her first term as a school board member. Her energy, her ideas, and her passion for education captivate me.

I’ve personally witnessed Christine’s personal values, philosophies, and progressive approaches for enhancing the educational system for our community in her first term on the school board. This is beyond political boundaries. I’ve witnessed her spend hours and days pouring through public emails Read More

Letter To The Editor: Please Vote For Christine Bernstein

By KRISTIN HENDERSON
Los Alamos

I am writing to encourage those who live in District 3 to vote for Christine Bernstein to keep her on our School Board.

Christine has proven herself, in her first term on the Board, to be passionate about our kids and their education, thoughtful about the decisions before the Board, and an advocate for our kids and our teachers (and endorsed by their union).

Very importantly, she is a cooperative person who brings other board members together in order to move initiatives forward.

She is also the only School Board member actively engaged in the Strategic Plan for the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Current And Former LAPS Staff Endorse Lauren Coupland For School Board

By the names listed below:

As active participants in our school system, we feel a profound responsibility to support candidates who share our commitment to the betterment of education and the welfare of our educators, students, and families.

We wholeheartedly respect the union’s endorsement process and the opportunty it gives rank and file members to engage in democracy at the grassroots level. However, as with most organizations, we don’t and won’t always see eye to eye.

It is with great enthusiasm that we share our belief that Lauren Coupland is the ideal candidate for School Board.

Letter To The Editor: Response To Rabbi Jack Shlachter

By GEORGE KYRALA
Los Alamos

With due respect to the Rabbi, his letter is inflammatory and devoid of respect to human rights.

Of course the attack by Hamas was horrible, unacceptable, and should not have happened, but the use of their action as an excuse for the barbaric revenge attack by Israeli government and their supporters to murder innocent civilians is never justified.

Bombing hospitals, destroying residences, and starving innocent people is never a civilized response.

I call on the USA to stop sending air carrier groups to the eastern Mediterranean, and instead send Liberty hospital Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote Sean for School Board!

By SHARON SEITZ
Los Alamos

Please vote for Sean for School Board.

This past spring, I urged our school board to make minimal changes (link1 link2) to the elementary, and no changes to our middle school and high school, calendar in order to comply with HB 130 legislation. I recommended more community engagement, with fair and balanced representation. As I wrote after our school board’s 4-1 vote for Calendar C, I was extremely disappointed that our elected school board members decided to ignore the majority of survey responses and comments from parents, students, and teachers.

It is clear that Read More
