Letter To The Editor: Response To State GOP’s Frank Trambley

By VALERIE FOX
31+ year Republican
Los Alamos

Mr. Trambley’s suggested defense of Mr. Trump’s walking away with documents that violated the Presidential Records Act of 1978, at a minimum, is that others did not get prosecuted (link).

In Court, when anybody gets caught in a criminal act, pointing the finger at somebody else who didn’t get prosecuted is not a defense. In fact, finger pointing is something that children do.

Stay on topic, Mr. Trambley. The records in Mr. Trump’s possession needed to be returned to the National Archives where they belong. I support their return. Any other stance Read More

Letter To The Editor: A Glorious Mess

By LYNN HANRAHAN
Los Alamos

Where discoveries are made — isn’t that our motto? I couldn’t get Mr. Chandler’s letter from yesterday (link) out of my mind, so I had to look for the old county violation letters in the document bag in the garage. When they arrived a few years ago I was enraged that someone came poking around, photographing a kids’ garden.

Now I see them differently. They make me so happy I could cry. It’s almost like we had paid serious money to document a day in the life of one of our homeschooling journeys. Botany — the photographs capture misadventures in weeping willow vascularity Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Walker’s Editorial ‘The Entire Republican Party Is Unfit For Office’

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

Response to Aaron Walker’s Editorial, “The Entire Republican Party Is Unfit For Office” (link).

Remember the Democrats’ cries of anguish from the 2016 election? “It’s not fair! It’s Hillary’s turn to be president! It was an illegitimate election! Hillary got the majority of the popular vote! Abolish the Electoral College!” Speaking of Hillary, let’s talk about the faces of the Democrat party; Bill and Hillary Clinton.

The Clintons and their Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) were never targeted by the FBI or IRS even though they’ve been selling influence and access Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thoughts On Bike Path Options

By BRUCE & JENNIFER TRENT
Los Alamos

This letter is to acknowledge and endorse the Letter to the Editor by Susan Barns published July 28 in the Los Alamos Daily Post (Link).

It is also written to thank the Los Alamos County Council for passing the motion to develop an expanded evaluation of all bike path options and to provide citizen feedback. The bike path proposals are significant, and it is important to find the optimal solution.

Our family has lived adjacent to Pueblo and Acid Canyons continuously for nearly forty years. The canyons have provided inspiration as we have all grown up under Read More

Letter To The Editor: Follow Council Direction And Save Trees And Money

By KEVIN HOLSAPPLE
Los Alamos

This letter is to provide my input to the Parks & Rec Board and to the community in general with respect to the County Consultant’s schemes for enlarging the golf course footprint.

In the public meeting I attended, I was led to believe that the impetus for the consultant’s work was to address a safety issue that had been raised about the possibility of golfers being struck by balls hit on the driving range. The County Council directed the development of alternatives for addressing the issue.

In doing so, the Council motion clearly stated that planning should be Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Republican Party Of New Mexico Statement On FBI Raid On Trump Mar-A-Lago Residence

By VALERIE FOX
Los Alamos

Chairman Steve Pearce of the Republican Party in New Mexico issued a tone-deaf response to the recent FBI raid on Trump’s residence.

His response does not represent the thoughts and values of this 31+ year Republican (much longer than Trump ever was) and individual with a criminal justice background.  Pearce has completely glossed over the fact that Trump previously surrendered from his personal possession 15 BOXES of documents that belong to the US government.

Let that soak in.

I cannot begin to fathom the number of man hours spent sifting through files to take Read More

Letter To The Editor: Endorsement Of Melanee Hand For Council

By ALISON SHURTER
Formerly of Los Alamos
(Daughter of Councilor Melanee Hand)

Appointed Los Alamos County Councilor Melanee Hand has her hand on the pulse of what Los Alamos needs now, because she’s seen how it has grown and changed, having been a resident of Los Alamos for over 35 years. She raised her own family here, and as her daughter I know the qualities she embodies that make her the ideal candidate for the future of the town.

The town’s current challenges are not easy: battling an ongoing affordable housing crisis, revitalizing vacant areas and encouraging local business & recreation, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Gary Stradling – Doing What We Want To Do?

By RICHARD SKOLNIK
Los Alamos

In a recent campaign piece, Gary Stradling stated that his “default choice” for public policy “is for each of us to do what we want to do.”

Mr. Stradling’s approach is remarkably self-centered and destructive. Mr. Stradling writes as if the choices he makes only have implications for himself. Sadly, this is not the case. Rather, many of our actions have important implications for others, for our community, and sometimes for our nation and our planet.

Mr. Stradling reflects the destructiveness of his position, for example, in his comments on water rates, especially Read More

Letter To The Editor: Reconsider Golf Course Plan

By DAVID RULE
Tesuque

I am not a resident of Los Alamos, but travel up often to play golf at your excellent municipal golf course.

Recently, talking to a local, I learned that the County is proposing plans to radically change the course layout in order to extend the existing driving range. These changes would be quite expensive, require the relocation of at least two holes into a native area – at considerable loss of existing trees – and close the front nine for several months, if not a whole season.

I can tell you – with certainty – that extending the driving range is not a priority for golfers. I’ve played
