Letter To The Editor: My Concern About Retail Cannabis

By CARRIE WALKER
Los Alamos

I would like to express my concern about retail cannabis potentially coming to Los Alamos.

I myself am a LANL employee, and I am concerned by the temptations that such businesses may cause for me, and for others. My daily commute passes the major commercial centers in town. How will I get home at night while driving past those cute little leaf logos? How do I stop myself from pulling over to sample their sweet smelling goods? And the gummies!

I fear for my job. This whole town may lose their jobs. Up until now, cannabis has been almost non-existent in our community, but I fear Read More

Letter To The Editor: Regarding Atomic City Cannabis Company’s Quest To Open Business In Los Alamos

By DIMAS CHAVEZ
Formerly of Los Alamos
I first moved to Los Alamos in 1943 during the height of World War II. The word “Cannaibis” was unknown to the majority of these pioneer residents at that time, and far less known to the younger population.
As we matured we discovered “beer” in our teens, and found an outlet to illegally purchase this alcoholic beverage. Yes, we got high at times, and never heard the term that this was the “gateway” to harder liquor or even the possibility of becoming an alcoholic. But we knew it was “AGAINST” the law to consume such being under the age of 21.
In high school we heard

Letter To The Editor: Issues Encountered While Trying To Mail Package To New Zealand

By M.M. CHARSLEY
Los Alamos

Recently I was eager to send a package to New Zealand for my daughter’s birthday. I had heard that the United States Post Office had suspended mail to NZ, so I took my package to an alternate system, our local UPEX.

There I found that to mail the 6lb package would cost up to more than $400. This was far more than the package was worth so I opted to call our local Los Alamos Post Office just to confirm that I couldn’t send it through them.

This is when things got interesting. The gentleman who answered the phone (I deeply regret not getting his name) told me that indeed there was no Read More

Letter To The Editor: Mandrake’s Screaming Mandate

By JOHN GONZALES
Los Alamos

If it were a sign from heaven, from the great beyond … or … there was a psycho killer who was after you – to destroy you – like Godzilla – all of you. With his Fire-breath, rained down on you and yours – laying your town to ashes, while – asking – not that it really matters … “hey, let’s get some coffee and a breakfast burrito, too.”

But where does Zozobra reside – in jail-in prison, locked up tight. The fire is real – burning like the crown, in Spanish, “corona”. But where does Zozobra reside, Ft. Marcey’s Park – Captured and there in the dark with all of you – having coffee.

Letter To The Editor: Response To Mark Of The Kroger

By DELIA CRUZ-MURPHY
Los Alamos

I would like to thank James Rickman for his Tongue & Cheek commentary of his perilous journey to the infamous Smith’s Marketplace (link).

Pre-dating the COVID pandemic people have scoured the isles looking for … anything, and left wanting.  When people finally make their way to the checkout line it wraps somewhere back to Kazakhstan where they meet up with Mike Dempsey.

It is a good thing I have been feeding the grackles, because the shiny marbles they have been leaving me might barter for some fresh strawberries that should hit the compost pile instead of my Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Deer-Friendly’ Suggestions To Los Alamos County

By ZHEN HUANG
Los Alamos

Having read Sean Williams’ detailed description of the 34th Street deer incident, (thank you County Councilor), I strongly feel that it is time for our local government to take prompt action to tackle the increasingly occurring deer incidents that have started to pose adverse impacts on our daily life.

It is not enough to have our residents devote their cherish and courage to conduct DIY rescue, not enough to have a couple of concerned citizens to voice openly, not enough to have responsible media constantly calling for public awareness.

Here is my suggestion for our Read More

Letter To The Editor: Mark Of The Kroger

By JAMES RICKMAN
Los Alamos

I should have known something diabolical was afoot here in Los Alamos when I first saw the grackles—the waves, the terrible waves, of grackles blackening the skies above Western Area and North Community.

I would have thought nothing of the sudden appearance of these foul, winged messengers had I not made an unplanned, and ultimately unsuccessful, excursion to Smith’s Marketplace this week to gather ingredients for Frito pie. It was during this foray that I learned the prophesies of St. John the Revelator were beginning to come true, that we have crossed some inexplicable Read More
