Letter To The Editor: Mask Mandates

By ROBERT D. DAY
Los Alamos

On Sept. 30, 2021, the Los Alamos Daily Post published an article by Richard Skolnik entitled, “Skolnik: COVID Update For Week Ending Sept. 27, 2021.” (link).

In this article, Mr. Skolnik summarized an Arizona study, on the CDC website, by stating, “Schools in two of Arizona’s most populous counties were 3.5 times more likely to have COVID-19 outbreaks if they did not have a mask requirement at the start of school compared with schools that required universal masking on day one.”

I found the article he referenced on the CDC website. It was entitled, “Association Between Read More

Letter To The Editor: To Be Or Not To Be – Atomic City Cannabis Company Update And Thank You

By WILLIAM and COLLETE HUNTER
Los Alamos

We attended the Los Alamos County Council’s Cannabis Retail Town Hall Monday evening, and were humbled and pleased by the community’s support for our home-based cannabis microbusiness quest!

It was a good Town Hall filled with reaffirming commentary on the subject. We are moving forward in the process to obtain our two business licenses (one state and one county), so we may have the privilege of serving our community’s cannabis needs in the future!

It is our great hope that the County Council will consider the wisdom of  going with the provisions of the Read More

Letter To The Editor: DOH Failure To Respond/Correct Critical COVID Testing Problems

By ROBERT F. WELLS
Los Alamos

Letter to the Honorable Michelle Lujan Grisham,

Understandably, NMDOH is being greatly stressed by COVID-19; however, even the most simple functions are not being performed properly.  New Mexico citizens deserve to have a DOH working at it very best – and not doing dumb things.

The subject of this complaint is the DOH responsibility to provide for the COVID testing needs of state citizens – not when and where it may be convenient to DOH “bumbling indifference as usual” staff.  Specifics follow:

I am 83 years old, a LANL retiree and a 46-year tax-paying resident of Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Los Alamos Voters

By MELANIE COLGAN
President
Los Alamos School Board

I would like to send a hearty thank you to the voters of Los Alamos and White Rock who made their voices heard, by voting in the recent election for the Los Alamos School Board, UNM-Los Alamos Advisory Board, and the Public Schools Building Act.

Further, a sincere thanks to those who chose to retain me as the School Board Representative for District 4 (Barranca).

I am deeply moved by the expression of confidence from the community and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’ll continue to be very conscious of the fact that I’m working for the best interests Read More

Letter To The Editor: To Be Or Not to Be – Atomic City Cannabis Company As A Home-based Integrated Cannabis Microbusiness?

By WILLIAM HUNTER
Los Alamos

My name is William Hunter. I’m a life-long (almost) resident of Los Alamos County. I first moved here when I was 4 years old, and have lived here, on and off, but mostly on, ever since.

I love living in Los Alamos because the community is safe, beautiful, and filled with good people. I hope to retire soon here; but continue to work here for a living, currently. I’ve worked as a Cosmetologist (“Hairdresser”) in Los Alamos for over 30 years. I became a small business owner in 1993, and leased (even then) very expensive spaces, uptown. Until 2002, when I converted the garage space Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Robert Day Claims On LANL COVID Deaths

By PAUL FERRELL
Los Alamos

Mr. Moses gave an excellent rebuttal of Mr. Day’s claims regarding COVID, but I feel I must point out an additional flaw in Mr. Day’s letter that was missed: Both the numbers and the math given by Mr. Day are fundamentally incorrect.

According to the latest data from the CDC there have been 356.2 thousand COVID deaths in the 18-64 age group, not 164.3 thousand as Mr. Day stated. Furthermore, the odds of dying from COVID were calculated incorrectly. That should be the ratio of deaths to the number of cases (Mr. Day used the total population as the denominator). The CDC estimates Read More

Letter To The Editor: Week #2 Seeking Social Cohesion Around Social Liberty

By JAMES J. KUROPATWINSKI
Los Alamos

Week #2 of the Triad Accommodation and a federal lawsuit is underway (see “Los Alamos National Lab Employees Bring Federal Lawsuit Over COVID-19 Religious Discrimination” link).

This, after the COVID-related death of Colin Powell (whom was vaccinated),  the testing positive of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorka (whom was vaccinated), and a recent report put forward by the New Mexico Department of Health that more than one in four reported new COVID infections are among the vaccinated.

At what point will the fear-induced incursions upon Read More

Letter To The Editor: More Support For Our ‘Recently Retired’

By ZHEN HUANG
Los Alamos

Thanks Eli Ben-Naim for the Los Alamos pandemic updates for the week ending Nov. 1. It’s very useful for taking in-time mitigation means to fight the pandemic.

Apparently, we have seen a community pandemic spread following the initial Barranca Elementary outbreak that has died down, a second wave is now creeping in. This time, it mostly attacks another vulnerable group of people, those who were recently forced to early retirement, or in the struggle of “to retire, or not to retire”, because of the pandemic.

The involuntary forced retirement poses extremely harmful Read More
