Letter To The Editor: Living Treasures Of Los Alamos Appreciates And Honors Memory Of Jim Gautier

By KYLE WHEELER
President
Board Members of Living Treasures of Los Alamos

The current Board Members of the Living Treasures of Los Alamos were saddened to learn of the passing of one of the founding members of the organization, Jim Gautier.

Jim graciously contributed his time to professionally photograph the 96 Living Treasures honored from 1999 to 2019. He also used his artistic skills to mount and frame the photographs. These beautiful photographs have been on display at the Los Alamos National Bank, now Enterprise Bank & Trust, for 20 years.

Jim also spearheaded the selection of artists

Letter To The Editor: Coyotes Are Vital To Our Ecosystem

Terry DuBois
Los Alamos

Although I am not on social media, I have heard rumblings of people encountering “aggressive” coyotes in town. Somebody took it so far as to kill one and dump it over the bridge by the old sewer plant.

Having lived on Walnut St. off and on for 64 years, I am fully aware of the wildlife in our canyons and mesas. Unfortunately, I was guilty of being an irresponsible dog owner and ended up carting dogs to the vet for stitches and antibiotics due to encounters with coyotes.

I learned from these experiences a couple of things. I did not have control of my dogs. I also realized that them Read More

Letter To The Editor: Comments On County Master Plan

By ROBERT F. BOURQUE, Ph.D., P.E.
Los Alamos

I have lived in Los Alamos for 22 years and retired from LANL seven years ago.

I looked over the County Master Plan slides and have some comments (in no particular order) that I would like to share:

  1. It seems to ignore the fact that it’s too cold here for almost half the year for the outdoor activities that the plan emphasizes.  And, because of that cold, people will want to park near their destination, not in some remote parking garage.
  1. The MeriMac shopping center just needs a face lift, not a tear down. A bowling alley in the old Smiths is a great idea. There

Letter To The Editor: A Metropolitan Redevelopment Area (MRA) In White Rock Could Help Spur Local Development

By LAURAN MCDANIEL
Director
Los Alamos MainStreet

Over the years there has been continued frustration about some of our visible and unsightly vacant buildings in Los Alamos and White Rock and declining retail options in the downtown.

The community, as well as business and property owners, seem to all want the same thing: A vibrant downtown and business-friendly community. How we achieve this may be up for interpretation in our unique town, but the reality exists that we must bring stakeholders together, including business owners and property owners, in a constructive way to initiate important Read More

Letter To The Editor: Unhappy With LACDC And Chamber

By AARON WALKER
White Rock

If I owned a local business, I would be tearing up my Chamber of Commerce membership after the Tuesday night County Council meeting. Patrick Sullivan, the executive director of the Los Alamos Commerce and Development Corporation provided public comment that was very telling of the way the LACDC and the Chamber see small businesses.

At that meeting, the Council was discussing a “pedestrian retail overlay zone” proposal to be sent to the Planning and Zoning Commission, which would alter zoning to prohibit first floor office space in downtown. During public comment, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Please Rethink Arbitrary Decision To Prohibit Offices From Occupying Ground Level Spaces In Buildings

By Bill ENLOE
Los Alamos

The votes by County Council to create a Zone that prohibits office space on the ground floor of buildings will have the unintended effect of causing more retail to be lost in our community (link).

Small retail is disappearing everywhere due to the big boxes and online sales. The larger regional and national stores have very strict guidelines on the population of the market area and traffic exposure. Unfortunately, Los Alamos does not qualify on either criteria.

Los Alamos needs to generate more traffic not less. Making arbitrary decisions without significant data showing

Letter To The Editor: Growing Up Mexican-American In Los Alamos

DIMAS M. CHAVEZ
Potomac, Md.

As a former resident of Los Alamos I read the Los Alamos Daily Post frequently. April 25, 2021, I read with keen interest the letter to the Editor titled “Growing Up As Asian American – The Model Minority Myth” by Olivia Koo.

Ms. Koo touched on a topic of great interest to me, and she presented it  eloquently. Her statement “One could say that Los Alamos is a manifestation of the model minority myth” was spot on.

I am Mexican-American. My family moved to Los Alamos Aug. 15, 1943, when I was six years old. When I began the first grade at Central School, when K-12 were all Read More

Letter To The Editor: U.S. Foreign Service Protecting Americans Overseas

By BRIAN L. GOLDBECK
Santa Fe

To protect Americans overseas and advance U.S. interests, I was proud to represent America in 10 posts in seven countries over my 32 years of service with the U.S. State Department.

I write this in advance of Foreign Service Day May 7, a day Congress designated honoring our active-duty and retired members of the Foreign Service, including some 250 Ambassadors and others that perished overseas while serving our nation.

This past year’s devastation and uncertainty has been difficult for everyone. This includes our 15,600 Foreign Service members that have remained Read More

Letter To The Editor: We Owe Our Most Profound Gratitude To Those Struggling To Keep Our Community Healthy

By DAVE LANNEN
White Rock

Having lived many years in foreign lands – relying on protracted – and often fractured supply chains; I have a deep appreciation of the difficulties of delivering a drug, such as the COVID vaccine.

It foremost requires a global supply chain of dedicated professionals, followed by a steadfast medical network – foremost of whom are medical logisticians – to deliver the shot in the arm.

Seldom have I seen such a combination of skills and dedication come together such as here in New Mexico; and especially in our county of Los Alamos.

Citizens of Los Alamos should be well proud Read More
