Letter To The Editor: Thank You Los Alamos County

By CONNOR MOORE
Los Alamos

I would like to thank Los Alamos County for the recent six-week internship opportunity they offered to 20 teens.

I was able to circulate between four departments, Public Utilities, Municipal Court, County Administration and Centralized Services, while other interns spent their six weeks with one.

It was very interesting to learn about various county departments and what goes on behind the scenes. I especially enjoyed meeting people from many areas and seeing the many projects happening around Los Alamos County.

I found all of my departments fascinating, and now Read More

Letter To The Editor: Regarding ‘Landlord Lobby Group’

By AARON WALKER
White Rock

The town hall regarding small business and George Chandler’s letter (link) to the editor have been very eye-opening. The town hall was a disaster.

Landlords were given 2+ hours of the 3 hour time frame. They utilized that not to talk about how to catalyze small business growth, but to lobby against the proposed downtown overlay.

The agenda should not have been allowed to be de-railed into a lobbying effort, and the fact that the small business owners got the scraps when it came to time is appalling and should be very embarrassing to the County Council.

A local landlord confirmed Read More

Letter To The Editor: 76th Anniversary Of Nagasaki Bombing

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

Today,  Aug. 9, is the 76th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Nagasaki; last Friday, Aug. 6, was the 76th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.

The headquarters of the IAEA is in the Vienna International Center. Just inside Gate 1 there’s a large Japanese peace bell that’s rung on these dates.

One such day there was a delegation of people from both cities headed by the mayor of Nagasaki. They had also brought some items from the blasts, like a watch stopped at exactly the time Little Boy exploded over Hiroshima. In one case there was a scrap of paper with a moving story Read More

Letter To The Editor: How Teaching Online Changed My Life

By AMANDA WALDSCHMIDT
5th Grade Teacher
Los Alamos Online Learning Academy

Things don’t always end up how you anticipate. I went into teaching kindergarten online with Los Alamos Online Learning Academy last year with anticipation, anxiety, and dread. My household is full of immune compromised people, so going back to teaching in a brick and mortar classroom was not an option for me. In case you haven’t ever seen a 5 year old, they’re not always the most hygienic people. I wasn’t, however, ready to give up teaching Kindergarten. So, I took on what felt like the monumental task of teaching kindergarten Read More

By AARON WALKER
Chair- CDAB
adwalker.cdab@gmail.com

Recently, the County Council approved a communications and outreach plan for the Community Development Advisory Board (CDAB). This is a plan that was developed by our communications working group to both inform as well as get feedback from the community about the Chapter 18 nuisance code.

This feedback will help the board collaborate with the consultant (Dekker/Perich/Sabbatini) during the re-write process for the nuisance code.

The board is looking for constructive, honest feedback about what the community likes and dislikes about Read More

Letter To The Editor: Suggestions For Los Alamos Skate Park

By FLOYD NOBLER
Tucson

For the past 4 weeks we have been visiting our daughter, son-in-law and our beautiful 6 and 4 year old grandchildren in your wonderful city.

As both kids love your skate park next to the library, we are frequent visitors. Lately we’ve noticed lots of trash, broken glass and some graffiti, all of which are not only unsightly and dangerous but do not fit the Los Alamos image.

I’ve got a few suggestions for the city fathers and mothers:

  1. Assign more manpower and frequent visits to the park to clean up;
  2. Add additional trash containers;
  3. Encourage the mothers of the skateboarders to

Letter To The Editor: Response To Councilman David Reagor

By JOYCE CARLSON
Los Alamos

In a sincere effort to understand the political sides of the discussions in our county and country over the last several years I’ve ended up reading a lot on cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, and neuroscience for the lay person. Scientists in these fields like Steven Pinker, David Eagleman, Daniel Kahneman, Robert Sapolsky, and Jonathan Haidt probably aren’t heard of much around this town full of scientists of another kind, but nevertheless they are doing very important work for our world. Oh, and Cal Tech physicists Sean Carroll and Leonard Mlodinow Read More

Letter To The Editor: The State Of New Mexico Business

By CHARLES SULLIVAN
Albuquerque

Why would any large, for profit, business want to come to New Mexico unless bribed to do so?

As New Mexico slowly stirs from its self-induced COVID coma, it finds itself with the highest unemployment rate in the country.

Surrounding states are bustling with economic activity while New Mexico yawns and stretches after its long and deep sleep. As is always the case, our politicos bemoan our lack of economic diversification and promise to bring jobs and economic development to the state.

Their chances of success are most likely doomed.

In the race to attract private Read More

Letter To The Editor: In Response To Mr. Skolnik

By DAVID REAGOR
Los Alamos County Councilor
In response to Mr. Skolnik (link):
The point of the AIDS comment in my previous letter is that the third world victims cannot pay for the medication. Of course one can set up a program with external funding to provide medication to the victims. Now they are dependent on that program. It is the ultimate big government control of their lives.  They would be served by an actual cure, not dependency.
The situation is much like modern welfare programs, they act as an economic quicksand that is very difficult to escape. A cynic would say that this trap is so effective
