Letter To The Editor: Thoughts On Our Constitutional Freedoms

By DOUGLAS REILLY
Los Alamos

I wish to comment on and amplify Katy Korkos’s excellent letter, Signs and Symbols (link). The First Amendment of our Constitution speaks of four freedoms; Speech, Religion, Assembly, and The Press.

As some of us learned in a high school Civics course, all freedoms have limits.

The Freedom of Speech does not allow you to shout FIRE in a crowded theater IF THERE IS NO FIRE! I remember a different expression that your freedom of speech ends the instant your fist touches my nose.

The Freedom of Religion allows you to follow any faith, or none, of your choosing; it does

Letter To The Editor: Excited About New Swimming Pool

By AIDAN COOLEY
Los Alamos

I am writing to you after seeing the plans for a new swimming pool on your page.

This is a super cool project. I think it will bring a lot of foot traffic as there isn’t a lot for kids to do in the summertime.

I do not know how it will work with both the aquatic center and four private pools around Los Alamos and White Rock. Nevertheless, I am excited.

But it also raised questions on how much money the county has. If they are able to give the community this swimming pool, I think there are a lot of other helpful things they could be providing. Nevertheless, I am excited about the construction. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Concerned And Royally Bummed Out Townsperson About Noticeable Western Area Bug Decline

By BRICLAUS PLAFF
Los Alamos

As a longtime resident of the Western Area, I’m just as good a guy as any to ask about the bug abundance in the neighborhood.

I’ve consistently, for years explored the neighborhood’s many public walkways and its secluded, almost plaza-style park. Fifteen years ago, the area was inundated with a great variety of insects, arachnids and pulmonate molluscs.

At a point, I began to notice a sharp decline in both cool and colorful bugs. These are always the first to go. Next, with less of these distinctive bugs to distract me, I established that the amount of large bugs was dropping Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Overbearingly Burdened By Derivative, Banal Scientific Jargon

By RANDY “THRASH” JAMESON
Los Alamos

The symbology of this town is unbearable.

I cannot seem to turn a corner without looking at some vaguely scientific, yet minimally-designed logo that brands itself  as “cute” or “quirky” by appealing to some chemistry joke or recognized symbol.

I’ve had enough of this.

The populace of this town is well aware that there is a national lab here, and that science is a major part of our existence, but have we not overcome this as our identity? Is Los Alamos not unique or special enough to separate our identity from the chemical symbol of uranium or whatnot?

As a recent Read More

Letter To The Editor: I’m Not Going To Cower Nor Remove My Sign On Your Timeline…

By Tw Houlton
Los Alamos

Your view expressed in your letter: “We value freedom of expression in this country, but that freedom has limits – we may not express hatred, and we cannot threaten lives. The meaning of your sign supporting Trump has changed since violent insurrectionists stormed the Capitol, carrying Trump banners and Confederate flags. Those insurrectionists were egged on by the President himself. The symbolism has changed.”: assumes ALL Trump supporters promote hatred and incite violence.

WRONG ANSWER. We as Trump supporters promote LEGAL validation of election results and Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Katy Korkos Opposition To Political Signs On Private Property

By GARY STRADLING
1st Vice Chair
Los Alamos Republican Party

I believe Katy’s reasons for stifling free speech are misplaced (link).

It has been the practice of the Left’s propaganda media and cheerleaders, during Donald Trump’s campaign and presidency, to set up extreme straw men, ascribing false actions and intents to him, and then to assault him in the media for their made up stories. Katy’s letter is marketing this same falsehood, and ascribing it to the homeowners who are expressing their political positions.

It is very clear to anyone with a level head and listening ear that the President

Letter To The Editor: Signs And Symbols

By KATY KORKOS
White Rock

Dear Neighbors:

During the election season, many of you placed yard signs in front of your houses, hung flags, and expressed your preference for local, state and national candidates.

As I walked around White Rock, I enjoyed seeing those expressions of opinion and of loyalty for one candidate or another. Many people now have signs in their yards expressing their core beliefs, alongside seasonal decorations and variations on the American flag. I especially enjoyed seeing the diversity of opinions expressed, as it reflected who we are as a community.

We value freedom Read More

Letter To The Editor: Yes! Stop The Steal!

By LEIGH HOUSE
Los Alamos

An article “RPLA Comments on Events of Jan. 6 in Washington, written by Bill McKerley, Chair of the Republican Party of Los Alamos, was published online Jan. 12 (link).

The pivoting in this article from a worthwhile topic to one that has been thoroughly debunked left me wondering what the purpose of the article actually is. I also wonder whether it represents the views of other members of the Republican Party.

After some remarks condemning the riot at the Capital Building on Jan. 6, the McKerley article pivots to repeating claims of election fraud, similar to what Trump Read More

Letter To The Editor: We Miss Los Alamos!

By Margit Mollhoff and Christian Forst
Texas

I just want to write a short note of how much our family misses traveling to Los Alamos.

About 15 years ago, our family used to live in Los Alamos. Both, my husband and I worked at the Lab and we raised our three children here.

Life happens, my husband found a new job in Texas and we moved on. Since then, it became a tradition for us to come back every year to visit friends and go skiing during the winter break.

Our children, who live and study now far away in California and Europe, always traveled the long way to come with us every year to meet their school friends and Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Beverly Simpson

By JEAN MARR
Los Alamos

I wanted to take this opportunity to thank in particular, Beverly Simpson, the Los Alamos Emergency Management Commander, the Los Alamos Fire Department and many others who dedicated their time and effort to start giving out the COVID vaccines.

I was one of the most fortunate to be able to get my first vaccine. When I arrived at the High School, I was greeted by Mr. Phil Gursky and checked in quickly and was given the vaccine immediately.

I had just a sore arm for 24 hours and feel so privileged to have been able to receive it. The entire process to get this was seamless for me, so well Read More
