Letter to the Editor: The Next Big Idea Might Tackle Ignorance

By JUDITH STAUBER and DANIEL COOPER
Los Alamos

It should be brought to the attention of the entire Los Alamos community that the 2013 Next Big Idea is scheduled on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and most important day of the Jewish calendar.

We understand that the event organizers have been aware of this conflict since January but decided to maintain the regularly scheduled plan for the 2nd Saturday in September. That decision is something that many members of the Jewish community in Los Alamos take to heart.

We realize not all people are aware of when Jewish holidays take place and since Read More

Column by Carolyn A. (Cary) Neeper, Ph. D.

My neighbors enjoy the fact that Coopers Hawks nest in their back yard, which edges on the steep canyon that houses tall Ponderosa pines and a pleasant stream in Walnut Canyon. Trouble is, there is no way that the dogs can protect a lone chicken from a hungry chicken hawk.

Years ago, when Jupiter, an old red hen I rescued from another bird-lover who had rescued her from someone else, went missing, all I found was a tuft of red feathers. It simply happened too fast. The neighboring hawk took Read More

Sustainability Tip: Green Your Labor Day

Sustainability Tip:

Green Your Labor Day

This Labor Day lets enjoy the outdoors and help preserve the natural beauty that surrounds us here in Northern New Mexico.

If planning a Labor Day party, help reduce waste by using reusable plates, cups and cutlery. Also, remember to make it convenient for your family and friends to recycle their bottles/cans after enjoying an ice cold libation. If attending a party, do your part by recycling and consider alternative transportation to get to the fiesta, whether it be carpooling or bicycling.

Sustainability Tip provided by the Los Alamos County Environmental Read More

Solo Traveler: Themed Travel – Art
Column by SHERRY HARDAGE

Themed travel was something I found myself doing without being aware of it. It appears, in retrospect, that my trip to Spain was all about tracking down modern art.

Seven of Antoni Gaudí’s projects are now World Heritage sites. It’s hard to be in Barcelona for one hour without running across his name, seeing something inspired by him or viewing a building that he designed.
