LANL Achieves 20-Year Low on Radioactive Air Emissions

  • Annual dose rate from the Laboratory far below EPA limit

Los Alamos National Laboratory achieved its lowest radioactive air emissions rate in 20 years in 2013, according to annual air quality results released recently.

Each year, the Laboratory measures air emissions through a comprehensive system of 40 air monitoring stations located at the Laboratory and in neighboring communities that provide data about ambient air quality. The Laboratory monitors 80 minor sources and 29 major sources at the Laboratory, such as exhaust stacks from radiological and nuclear facilities.

LANL: Learn About Counseling, Referral Services

LANL News:

The public can learn about services offered by Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Employee Assistance Program at three, free informational sessions at the Bradbury Science Museum in downtown Los Alamos.

The one-hour, interactive presentations are scheduled 9-10 a.m. Sept. 16, Sept. 23 and Oct. 21 and open to Laboratory employees and the public. Attendees also will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Dynofit CEO Demonstrates Biofeedback Through Video Gaming

Rohan Loveland of Dynofit Inc. shows how the video game he designed can be used as a biofeedback devise to teach muscles to flex or relax. Electrodes are placed on the muscle and the person uses a flex or relax motion to play the game. WIPP: Additional Areas Cleared in Underground Facility

WIPP: personnel continue to work diligently to restore normal access to the WIPP underground facility. The graphic identifies areas that have been surveyed for radiological contamination. The areas highlighted in green have been found to be contamination free. The surveys are conducted on the salt surfaces of the mine, but also include survey and release of any equipment or other structures located in these areas. Individuals conducting radiological surveys are trained on use of radiation detection equipment and the actions that are required should they identify radioactive contamination. Read More

Laser-generated neutrons could one day be enlisted to help fight the War on Terror.

Using the short-pulse laser at Los Alamos’s TRIDENT facility, Los Alamos National Laboratory researchers generated a neutron beam with novel characteristics that interrogated a closed container to confirm the presence and quantity of nuclear material inside.
