Elizabeth “Biffer” Martins was born in Illinois in 1922 and grew up in a small suburb of Rock Island called Milan. She loved school and tap dancing!

She graduated from Rock Island High School where she was the valedictorian. Following her high school graduation, her family moved to New Mexico, where her father had been born. 

Biffer used the shorthand she had learned in high school to work as a court reporter for the District Court in Albuquerque.

Marilyn Petschek, née Poth, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2017 at the age of 92. She was living at El Castillo in Santa Fe at the time of her passing. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.

On October 30, 2017 George H. Kolb passed away peacefully in the care of Hospice of the Valley in Surprise, Arizona with family at his side.

George was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 10, 1919. After technical high school, he became a welder by trade. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific assigned to the Seabees.

Camilla Patricia Van Sloun, 93, affectionately known as “Pat”, “Patty” and “Aunt Patty” and to her working contemporaries as “Van”, born on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1924 passed away on November 10, 2017 after a long and fruitful life.

Barbara Keady longtime resident of Los Alamos who was a Los Alamos High School graduate in 1977 was a strong woman who battled brain cancer for 3 1/2 yrs.

Unfortunately, the cancer won the fight in the end, as she passed away peacefully on Oct. 29, 2017.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., on Monday, November 20, 2017, at Calvary Albuquerque, 4001 Osuna Rd. NE.

Joy Lynn Handsberry of Albuquerque, New Mexico, born April 5, 1968 in Dover, Delaware, lost her valiant battle with ovarian cancer on November 3, 2017 in Albuquerque. Joy was 49 years old.

From 1958 to 1969, he worked as a Siskiyou Smoke Jumper in the Northwest during the summers while attending college. After graduating, he received a post-doctorate position at NASA in Houston, Texas.

Jean Dummer died on Friday November 3, 2017. She was 86 years old. She died peacefully at home surrounded by her family after an unexpected devastating stroke.

Betty Jean Roberts Dummer was born February 1, 1931 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She married Jerry on June 1, 1952, and after a year in Nashville (Jerry’s grad. school) and two years in Maryland (U.S. Army), they settled permanently in Los Alamos, NM in November of 1953.
