I  know that we thanked Mrs. Gerhart every time she led one of our young family members in band at the Los Alamos Middle School and with her serious business demeanor and greatly loving heart stood for the many years that we had a child or grandchild studying her direction.

She would show them that they, the kids, were being taken seriously by the people before them, ready and full of anticipation of what they had accomplished. In an April 27 press release published in the Los Alamos Daily Post (link), Leilani Christensen is quoted as saying,“Our forefathers founded National Day Of Prayer. Many of them had escaped persecution for their beliefs in their homeland. In the news today, we see that people are still fleeing their homeland because of persecution.” [sic]

This message reflects my personal view about the upcoming 2017 Rec Bond and does not represent a statement or position from any other organization where I am involved, including the Los Alamos County Parks and Recreation Board. Letter To The Editor: Help The Hummingbirds Tonight

Tonight (Saturday), the temperature will drop to 25 degrees in Los Alamos, which will be very hard on hummingbirds.

It may help them if people who have hummingbird feeders take the feeders inside tonight after dark (when hummingbirds go into their nightly stupor). Then bring the feeders back outside just before dawn (when the birds wake up) so the hummingbirds will have something warm to feed on.

Just don’t forget to bring the feeders out by 6 a.m. Sunday!

While it may not be quite saint-hood, it is close! There is a way we can celebrate all the good that Russ Gordon has done for the community and for the music he brings to us. He has been a moving force in more than music, but that is how many of us know him. Maybe you even remember his store as being a safe place for kids to hang out when it was located in White Rock.
 
I have nominated Russ Gordon to be named a Los Alamos Living Treasure. I recently learned that back-up letters of recommendation are needed to even consider a nomination.

In response to the April 26 “Home of the Brave” letter, I’ll be brief.

The message, jumbled as it was, was nativist and ugly. The writer failed to address the issue raised by Mr. Goldman (link); immigration is a serious matter, one that demands rational conversation, not invective. No one who wants to have his argument heard tells an American to go back to anywhere.

As the son of German immigrants who were escaping persecution and death prior to WWII as well as a Veteran of two branches of military service for this country, I am deeply offended by Mr. Goldman (link). Did he ever serve in Canadian or the U.S. forces? News Flash: We NEVER stopped being the Home of the Brave. Freedom is NOT free! People die or worse, they are maimed for life so you can have it!

I am increasingly dismayed by the recurring disingenuousness of our County Council. 

Over the last half-century, they have continually failed to press the DPU to charge rates high enough to account for amortization of facilities, as any good business must do. As little as 1 percent higher rates over that period would have provided a substantial fund to replace the wastewater treatment plant and refurbish water and sewer lines without a significant rate increase as is now necessary.
