Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘I Say Keep Them All Out!’

By DUSTIN JOHNSON
Los Alamos

I’m not sure if I have ever read a more hateful, bigoted, or inaccurate piece of writing (letter) in my life (with the possible exception of some of the letters about Planned Parenthood in the Los Alamos Daily Post this summer).

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world, a diverse a group of people as any on this planet. To paint them all as identical from knowing a handful in a single country is simply ridiculous, and Mr. Antos is resorting to stereotyping in the extreme.

To demonize all of Islam from a the writings of a handful of religious scholars and a selective Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To Insensitive Comments About Turkish People

By ISRAEL OWENS
Los Alamos

I’m writing in response to Gerald’s (Antos) letter about refugees where he takes the liberty to meander off the main topic and make insensitive comments about Turkish people.

In his letter, he draws from his personal experience to more or less insinuate that Turks are religious fanatics looking for handouts, and act irrationally when they don’t get what they want. This is very unfortunate since the topic was about the plight of refugees and not Turkish people.

The last time I checked, there were refugees looking to settle in Turkey, and not the other way around. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Response To ‘Keep Them All Out’

By RAO GARIMELLA
Los Alamos

How ironic that the letter “I Say Keep Them All Out” was published just a week before Thanksgiving day, the holiday that the refugee Pilgrims fleeing religious persecution are said to have celebrated after surviving their first year in the New World, with the help of Native Americans.

I am sure the subsequent land grabs and violence against the “Natives” by descendants of the “Refugees” makes some natives feel like it should have been “Misgiving day.”

Nevertheless, the new world survived and became a great nation that welcomed many others to peace and prosperity. I Read More

Letter To The Editor: I Say Keep Them All Out!

By GERALD ANTOS
Los Alamos

In response to Steven Storms letter, yes it is true that we should accept refugees, yes it is what makes this country as great as it is and yet I have a problem will all your do-gooder thinking!

I spent 13 months stationed in Turkey and got to know the locals very well and though there weren’t any ISIS or Al-Qaida terrorists there they were all very Islamic. The people were as nice as they could be as long as you gave them all that they wanted or needed but when you got on their bad side their Muslim side came out very quickly and they became some of the most irrational people I have ever Read More

Letter To The Editor: Why We Should Welcome Syrian Refugees With Open Arms

By DUSTIN JOHNSON
Los Alamos

After the horrific terrorist attacks in Paris last Friday, I have been alarmed and disgusted by the Islamophobic, anti-Syrian, and often violent backlash across North America and Europe. And now it has come to New Mexico with our governor’s statement that she opposes Obama’s plan to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees, joining a rapidly expanding bandwagon of (mostly) Republican governors. This standpoint is morally bankrupt, utterly uninformed by the facts, and completely counterproductive.

First, some perspective. The US has resettled 1,800 Read More

Letter To The Editor: Unclear Whether County Is Frugal Or Expensive But Very Clear Employees Are Efficient

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

I don’t know why Fortune smiles on some and lets the rest go free.–The Eagles

A recent report on New Mexico municipalities makes it quite unclear whether Los Alamos County is expensive or frugal but very clear that its employees are very efficient.

The County budget is almost as large per resident as that of Santa Fe. But before you say “Aha!”, consider that our County includes electric and natural gas services, but Santa Fe does neither.

On the other hand, Las Cruces does provide natural gas service with a much lower budget per resident. On the

Letter To The Editor: Why Is It …?

By JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

We have received our annual Los Alamos County property tax bill. It says to send a check or money order.

We pay other recurring LAC bills, such as utilities, on a monthly basis via direct withdrawals from our banking account. Why is it that we do not have the same additional option given to us by LA County to have our property tax debited from our bank account, on a given annual date for the full bill or on two, given, semiannual dates for the 1st half and 2nd half installments, in addition to writing checks?

Besides being convenient, as is doing so for our utility payments via

By LORI DAUELSBERG
Pumpkin Glow Chair
President of Los Alamos Arts Council

On behalf of the Los Alamos Arts Council, I would like to thank the community for coming out and supporting the Pumpkin Glow. The LAAC would not be able to produce this event without the help of the following people: Lisa Lloyd, Joe Lloyd, Apgar Family, Carol Fleming, the people at The Bradbury Museum, Los Alamos County (in particular the Parks and Recreation Department), MainStreet and the board of the Los Alamos Arts Council.

This year we collaborated with students from DECA. We thank them for the hours spent volunteering Read More
