Letter To The Editor: Trapping Season Has Begun

By TERRY DUBOIS
Los Alamos

Citizens and visitors to Los Alamos County beware! The trapping season for fur bearing animals began Nov. 1 and runs through March 15.

Law states that traps should be 25 yards from any trail or road but they do not have to be marked with a warning in any sort of way. They can be completely invisible. My dog was caught in one in 2014 in Los Alamos County. The trap was illegally set on a trail.

Unfortunately New Mexico Department of Game and Fish was unable (or unwilling) to issue a citation. Our county council expeditiously passed an ordinance to ban them in this county. Read More

Letter To The Editor: ‘Recreation In Los Alamos’

By JAMES ROBINSON
Los Alamos

Over the last few years, Los Alamos has made wonderful strides in providing recreation activities across the county.

I have heard many people say that our trail system rivals similar systems in Colorado and is better served because of its access from anywhere in town, the skate park continues to be a place where kids and teens can go to work on their skills, our parks are clean and well maintained, and our ice rink continues to be a popular destination in the winter.

However, the one thing Los Alamos lacks is a central recreation

Letter To The Editor: ‘Heidi Taylor’

By DEBRA STEINMAN
Los Alamos

I was in shock when I picked up a copy of the Los Alamos Daily Post and read about Heidi Taylor’s Obituary.

The last time I saw her, she was healthy, happy, and exceptionally busy at Memory Maker’s.

I first met Heidi Taylor around 1995. I was six months pregnant with my first child. Heidi, and her wonderful family were the first people to make me feel welcome. I lived on the other side of the street, and she always greeted me with a smile. She never hesitated to welcome me and my husband into her home.

Both Luke and Hannah were among the

Letter To The Editor: Just Say No To Reorg

By JIM REDMAN
Los Alamos

The Los Alamos County Council should reject the proposed re-organization that adds the position of “Deputy Public Works Director.”

Despite the recently voiced concerns of the County Council, link, I think that the Los Alamos citizens communicate one message very clearly – stop wasting taxpayer’s money. You would have thought that they would have heard this message after the outrage over the tagline debacle.

The departure of the head of the Community and Economic Development Department (CEDD) provides an opportunity to reassess, and hopefully Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Pedestrians Beware…

By DAREN SAVAGE
Los Alamos

The nation’s 4th worst drivers are out in force today. While driving home for lunch today, I observed a hapless pedestrian almost get hit twice in one intersection.

This young man was approaching the intersection of 20th and Trinity (on the Ashley Pond side). Just as he was going to cross 20th, a lady in a red sedan cut in front of him in her zeal to beat any traffic (there was none).

After the red sedan lady zoomed in front of no traffic, the young man proceeded to cross the intersection only to have a middle aged man in a gray SUV hypotenuse through the intersection Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Residential Care Options Vs Overlooked ‘Inbetweeners’

By JULIE SMITH
Los Alamos

“Los Alamos Retirement Community” sounds like a wide-reaching organization, but do you really know which residents are helped by the live-in facilities available in Los Alamos, and which are not helped, are not eligible, or fall into the “inbetweener” category? You may think you know, but this is my ongoing experience.

Los Alamos Retirement Community’s live-in care options are Aspen Ridge Assisted Living, and Sombrillo Rehab and Nursing Home. There are vast differences in the life-stages and/or financial abilities of folks who are eligible and able to live

Letter To The Editor: Heads Up Alert In White Rock

By Concerned Resident
White Rock

It seems a group of youth are now going around White Rock selling a cleaning product. I spoke with some neighbors on our street, and the one who had them at their door, noticed this morning that the gate to the back yard was open.

Hearing this, I checked our back gate, and it was also open. I am going to let the police know, but thought you all might want to let the citizens know to be aware of this activity. I checked on the product they were selling and it is a true product, the sales information says it benefits, “Inner City Youth.” Read More

Letter To The Editor: E Pluribus Unum

By VERNON KERR
Los Alamos

What does E Pluribus Unum mean to you? It is found on the Great Seal of the United States of America.

E Pluribus Unum is Latin for “out of many one”. This is the ideal of our forefathers who saw a vision of our new nation where the many came to our shores with different cultures, different ethnicities different religious and many other differences, which they would meld together to form one great nation, the United States of America.

This was to be the “melting pot”. No one culture would predominate and all would contribute from such diverse backgrounds.

This was the vision. Read More

Letter To The Editor: High School Traditions Of Days Past

By CHRISTINA HANSON
Los Alamos

Walking perimeter trail this past weekend, I noticed that the graduation years on LA mountain are bold and strong, seen easily from the trail, however the LA itself made of the rocks up there is long since faded and gone.

I had the opportunity to work with some high schoolers last year, who told me that they were no longer allowed to go up and paint LA mountain during homecoming week, due to concerns by administrators at the high school that it was getting too rowdy.

Really? In speaking with some other friends who grew up here and graduated before my time, we were reminiscing
