Letter to the Editor: Uncollected Trash

By ROBERT PELAK
Los Alamos

It is 7 p.m. on a Tuesday evening and the trash bins line my street still holding their precious contents.

Looks like our side of the street was forgotten again even though the bins on the other side were emptied. This is getting to be a regular occurrence – every month or two either the trash or recyclables are not collected.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Letter To The Editor: Our Greatest Asset Is Something We Can’t Build Or Develop …

By ASHLEY MAMULA
Los Alamos

Dear Los Alamos County Councilors,

First I would like to say that while I am a member of the Planning and Zoning Commission, I do not intend to represent the views of the commission.

I wholeheartedly support the Open Space Management Plan and I am thankful to the county and community members who have devoted so much time and effort to this endeavor.

Many of us want great things for our town: a vibrant downtown, restaurants, more shopping, nicer houses … but our greatest asset is something we can’t build or develop. It is, however, something we really need to make sure Read More

Letter To The Editor: Point Of Plan Is To ‘Protect’ Remaining Open Space

By TINA SIBBITT
Los Alamos

To the Los Alamos County Council:

I was able to listen to most of [February]’s presentation by Craig Martin and company to Council of the proposed Los Alamos County Open Space Management Plan.

I wholeheartedly support the Plan and thank Craig Martin and the team for their tremendous work, research, blood, sweat and tears that obviously have gone into this project! I am sure that the Plan will undergo further revisions and proposals.

Here are the points that sprang out at me from the discussion and questions:

The Plan performs the critical function of addressing Read More

Los Alamos county should incorporate the bag ban because plastic is drastically affecting our planet in many harmful ways.

Currently carbon dioxide levels are the highest yet, 385 ppm (parts per million). Carbon dioxide reflects infrared rays back to Earth, thus warming our planet.

Plastic bags release a lot of carbon dioxide when they are made. To make one kilogram of plastic it takes six kilograms of carbon dioxide. There are 46,000 pieces of plastic in every square mile Read More

Letter To The Editor: Fine Leveled Against LANL Is Egregious; Reflects Ignorance Of Authority

By RICHARD STUPKA
White Rock

The three editorials/articles published in the Journal the weekend of Feb. 22-27 reflect a serious lack of understanding of the relationship of federal nuclear facilities to the State of New Mexico, a misrepresentation of risk and risk analysis of incidents that fall outside the operational safety envelope of these facilities, and the role that the Department of Energy (DOE) has assumed without adequate or trained personnel to manage the sites under its jurisdiction.

The $57 million fine levied by the state is egregious, inappropriate and reflects

Letter To The Editor: ‘Running For My Life’

By DELANEY RIEKE, President
Los Alamos Chapter of Hadassah

I hope by now most of you have seen fliers, received registration forms, or heard about the 5th Annual “Run for Her Life” April 19 at East Park.

There is nothing more therapeutic than going out on a run. Running clears my mind and frees my soul, but it wasn’t always like that for me. Not too long ago even the thought of jogging shorts and running shoes gave me panic attacks with flashbacks of a particular yelling gym teacher, a cramp in my side, and frantically searching for my inhaler.

I was one of those people who said,

Letter to the Editor: New Mexicans Should Stand Up

By JESSE GUILLEN
Santa Fe

As the United States and Iran work toward a historic nuclear draft accord on the status of Iran’s nuclear program, dozens of US senators have interfered in the negotiations.

Sen.r Tom Cotton and 46 others sent an ill-informed letter to Ali Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran, threatening to end any negotiated agreement regarding nuclear weapons once President Obama leaves office. This undermines the President’s ability now, and in the future, to achieve the national security goals of the United States.

It should be the long-term goal of our national Read More

Letter to the Editor: 2015 Session Was Not Fun

By RICHARD ELLENBERG
Former Chair of the Democratic Party of Santa Fe County
Current Candidate for Democratic Party of New Mexico State Chair

Congratulations to our Legislators for coming together in our big tent to turn back efforts to hurt workers and children. The session was not fun, and was full of ‘my way or the highway’ tactics.

The Republicans at the last minute amended the bipartisan capital improvement bill, cutting programs for seniors, education and others, to create a highway slush fund for the Governor to dole out to her supporters. At the end, they gave the Senate 20 Read More

Letter To The Editor: Lou Pierotti’s Passing

By SHEILA ARMSTRONG
Los Alamos

I see that one of our most beloved and popular Los Alamos cornerstones has died, having touched many, many lives in such a warm and positive way.

Not only did he always embrace everyone with a genuine smile and warm heart, but he also contributed to the community of Los Alamos in so many constructive and helpful ways. He inspired us to laugh!

I will be forever grateful for his encouragement, support, and belief in us as youth cheering us on to do our best playing ball. He sponsored our girl’s Lassie League Team, treating us to sodas when we lost
