Letter To The Editor: Apology To Snow And Ice Crew

BY KYLE ZIMMERMAN
Los Alamos

Last week I wrote a letter to the editor about snow on the sidewalks.

My letter was written partly in jest and partly in frustration. I was remembering the times, as Los Alamos County Public Works director, when I would be criticized for things that were out of my control by residents who did not have all of the facts.

I did the thing that I hate. I wrote a letter without getting the facts. The sidewalk plows were broken down. The plows are from Canada and very difficult to get parts. I remember when parts would be taken from one broken plow to Read More

LAPS Superintendent Urges Students And Parents To Participate In PARCC Tests

By Dr. GENE SCHMIDT, SUPERINTENDENT
Los Alamos Public Schools

Open Letter to Students and Parents:

We have been made aware of campaigns on social media and other media sources encouraging students to participate in walkout protests of PARCC tests. Los Alamos Public Schools respect the rights of individuals to demonstrate as long as the demonstrations are safe, orderly, and respect the rights of their fellow students to participate in testing without being disrupted.

One of our Board non-negotiable goals is safe and civil campuses and we expect students who may choose to protest to Read More

Letter To The Editor: Poor Traffic Control Caused Mobile Home Traffic Jam

By JOE MOLTER
SANTA FE

Coming from White Rock yesterday, I was caught in the mobile home traffic jam. While of course frustrated with the mobile home tractor driver’s poor judgement and even worse driving ability, I bit the bullet, turned around, and drove back around through the lab and down the truck route to head home to Santa Fe.

What really frosts me, and what I am writing about, is the poor response from the Los Alamos Police Department (LAPD). When I initially turned around on Hwy 4, the Hwy 4/truck route intersection was open and moving. As I approached the intersection

Letter To The Editor: Thank You Morning Glory For Kindness To County Crews, Dispatchers And Police

By SGT. DANIEL ROBERTS
Los Alamos Police Department

I would like to extend a thank you to the owners and employees of Morning Glory / Daylight Doughnuts. Los Alamos has seen a lot of snow these past few days. The snow and ice made very dangerous roads conditions and caused several crashes. The Los Alamos County road crews worked hard to keep up with the prevailing weather; working long hours without stop.

Noticing the road crews, plows, sand trucks and police on the streets, Morning Glory stopped by the Los Alamos Police Department Dispatch Center with boxes filled with doughnuts. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Our Schools And Our Children Are Not For Sale

By GERRY WIGGINS
Los Alamos

Public education is one of America’s greatest achievements and assets. The schools belong to the communities and provide free education for all children regardless of race, wealth, religion, or disability.

Each district is held accountable through a publicly elected school board that the can be replaced periodically by the voters. Additionally, each district is funded through a system of democratically approved bond and tax measures.

On the whole, the American people choose to fund this great public asset to the tune of $600 billion Read More

Letter to the Editor: Keep Plastic Bags In Los Alamos

By JOYCE ANDERSON
Founder, Save the Bag: Los Alamos

In the last month there have been two very emotionally charged letters written by Jody Benson, a Sierra Club member, to the editor demanding a ban on plastic shopping bags in Los Alamos County. Understandably this topic is going to generate a lot of discussion because it concerns how people choose to shop and live their lives.

Before we ban plastic bags and allow needleless government intrusion into a private transaction, let’s look at some facts regarding plastic shopping bags. Plastic bags are made of #2 (high-density polyethylene Read More

Letter To The Editor: LANL Highlights CASL Scientists And Engineers

By LANL Public Affairs Office

In response to Bill Johnson’s letter published in this morning’s edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post, LANL’s Public Affairs Office issued the following:

Thank you for the opportunity to highlight the names of the many individuals who have contributed to the success of this excellent program. Usually in articles and press releases we don’t have this luxury, but this is a good chance to get their names into the spotlight.

As with most complex science projects, there are many people who work hard to make things happen on many levels, Read More

Letter To The Editor: Novice Swimmers Need Leisure Pool

By BILL HUDSON
Los Alamos

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to scuba dive, snorkel, water ski, surf, participate in beach parties, pool parties, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, a crew team, river running, fishing, fancy diving, water ballet, water polo, synchronized swimming, and a variety of the new water sports?

All of these activities have one common thing that is required to participate. You must know how to swim.

Swimming is easy to learn. Pre-school children can swim; students at all levels can swim. You are never too young or too old to learn to swim. Children can compete in the age group programs. Read More
