Letter to the Editor: Why Right-To-Work Is Wrong For New Mexico

By Sen. WILLIAM “BILL” SOULES
D-37-Dona Ana

SANTA FE – When I ran for public office, I made a commitment to make decisions based on facts, accurate information, and data and not on emotions, word-spin, and marketing.

The so-called “right-to-work” bills moving through the New Mexico Legislature are perfect examples of laws where spin and marketing are used to obfuscate, obscure, and confuse people about the real effects and purposes of the legislation.

The very name, “right-to-work,” was carefully chosen to affect public opinion when, in fact, the legislation has nothing to do with the rights Read More

Letter to the Editor: Please Support Nan And Jenny Today!

By ASHLEY MAMULA
Los Alamos

I hope everyone will take some time today to vote in our school board elections.

I strongly support Jenny McCumber and Nan Holmes. I have worked with both on the Mountain PTA over the years. For as long as I have known Nan and Jenny, they have devoted the majority of their time serving the children in our district, not because of any political aspirations, but because they are committed to Los Alamos and want it to be a great place for not only their kids but all the children who are a part of our community.

Anyone who knows them knows how hard they both have worked for our kids. I Read More

Letter to the Editor: Talk Long Before Procedure Needed

By JEAN MARR
Los Alamos

My reason for writing this is two fold. First and foremost there are no words that could express fully the thanks and praise for the care, compassion and love shown from the staff at Aspen Ridge Assisted Living Facility to my mother in law, Virginia Marr, who recently passed away.

We could never have made it through this experience without their help and expertise. How lucky this community is to have such a wonderful facility to help with our aging community members. Thanks also to Ambercare Hospice for their help during Virginia’s last days.

A very special thanks to Read More

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Traffic Lights

By GERALD ANTOS
Los Alamos

I’d have to agree with Glen Michel’s letter whole heartily but I believe that he didn’t take it quite far enough.

We live in a small quiet community whose streets roll up for the evening at around 7 p.m. every night and don’t awaken till about 6:30 a.m. the next day. That being said, why on earth do we need any of the traffic lights to be doing anything but flashing red/yellow after 7 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.?

First off, there isn’t enough traffic to warrant their being fully operational 24/7 and the #1 waste of fuel in automobiles is that time wasted stopping Read More

Yang: Machiavelli & Lao Zi

Machiavelli & Lao Zi

By ELENA YANG
Los Alamos

I am truly behind in my reading, more than 500 years in some cases. I have heard of Machiavelli’s The Prince for years, and I have certainly used “Machiavellian” often enough to be curious about its origin. It’s only recently that I read the thin but impactful manuscript. What a read.

It’s also amusing to follow up on Lao Zi’s non-intervention principles, of last week, with Machiavellian’s downright meddling principles. I contend that skillful and effective leaders and managers employ both Lao Zi’s and Machiavelli’s ideas.

Letter to the Editor: Arrogance Or Necessity?

Arrogance Or Necessity?
By LAPS Concerned Parents

Here is a letter we wish we could sign but can’t because we still have students attending Los Alamos High School and do not trust that they would not experience a blacklash from the administration. Other parents have shared directly with us how their children have been threatened and badly treated. If it were only our necks we were sticking out, we would proudly do it but we are unwilling to put our children in difficult and untrustworthy situations.

We whole heartedly agree with the recent letter regarding the duties and responsibilities of the Read More

We’re writing to ask that you take some time to participate in the Los Alamos Public School Board election. This coming Tuesday is Election Day and your last opportunity to vote.  There are three school board positions representing districts in the Town Site that are up for election, as well as two positions on the UNM LA Advisory Board.

This is a very important election for our community. Our school district is facing many issues that require strong leadership and careful oversight by the School Board. At this critical juncture, we need a full slate Read More

By ANDREA CUNNINGHAM, Candidate

Los Alamos School Board District 3

For those of you who thought we were finished with election season after November, we are not done yet! We still have a very important election for School Board and the UNM-LA Advisory Board on Feb. 3.

As with any election, it is critical to participate in our democratic process and make your voice heard. With only 160 votes cast as of Thursday morning, over three different districts, the majority of the community still has yet to participate.

Letter to the Editor: Take Time To Vote

By KAREN DOEBLING
Los Alamos

I am writing to encourage everyone to get out and vote in the School Board election next Tuesday, Feb. 3.

According to the County Clerk’s announcement, you can vote 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the Municipal Building and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday (Election Day) at the Municipal Building and White Rock Fire Station #3 Vote Centers.

All three Los Alamos townsite districts, Districts 3, 4 and 5, are up for election and for the first time in many years there are contested races, so you have choices.

As a resident of District 5, I support Jenny McCumber. Jenny is practical and
