Los Alamos Daily Post

Some (okay all) of my family members are continually telling me I have no sense of humor. I prefer to think of myself as discerning where comedy is concerned. In any case, I’m generally a hard sell with comedy, so when I tell you I was rolling in the aisles and laughing my head off along with the rest of the full house at Los Alamos Little Theatre Friday for opening night of “Murdered to Death” it’s quite a compliment to the play and the performers.

Letter to the Editor: Frustration With Mandated Testing

By DARREN MEADOWS
Los Alamos

I thought I would share a note from a friend of mine regarding the state’s flawed teacher/student evaluation plan and encourage all of the community to get involved, informed and evaluate the opt out option.

Dear Mrs. Skandera and Governor Martinez: I am a level 3, National Boards Certified Teacher in my 14th year teaching high school English. I score AP essays each summer and write curriculum.

As one of the highest paid teachers in the state, I am also a divorced mother of two children who can hardly pay rent without side work. So on top of grading 150 essays a week, attending Read More

PNM Greenwashing Plan For More Coal And Nuclear

Karen Paramanandam

Hello New Mexico, my name is Karen Paramanandam, marketing director at Positive Energy Solar.

It is with great respect for the people of this state that I feel I must speak up.

I miss the days of truth in advertising. It is amazing to me that PNM gets away with the outrageous claims they make in their full-scale PR assault on the good people of New Mexico.

Every time we see a PNM advertisement these days, it is full of half-truths and exaggerated statistics.

For instance:

“More Sol. Less Coal” is PNM’s latest spin in their “green” campaign, but what they aren’t telling you is Read More

Letter to the Editor: Stop Judgmental Glances

By LUKE JOHNSON
Daniel’s Cafe

As a longtime employee of Daniel’s Cafe, I wish to inform all customers that it is indeed the employees’ fault that our most popular trademark, ice cream, is tragically absent. Thus, the scathing looks, comments, and disappointed sighs are completely warranted, since, as aforementioned, it is our decision that Häagen-Dazs ice cream should be replaced with disappointment–but we offer it for free!

In all seriousness, I understand Los Alamos residents often dislike change, and it is understandably frustrating when a long (ten to fifteen Read More

To Episcopal Church: How Drunk Would Jesus Drive?

Los Alamos

That old question, What Would Jesus Do (WWJD?), is a little tired, but pretty much on point for anyone who has ever studied or practiced Christianity.

Having been confirmed in (into?) Catholicism by a bunch of crazy Jesuits back at the University of Hawaii’s Newman Center, after spending time at the “thinking intensive” masses under Fr. Vin Rush at SUNY Stony Brook, that includes me. Thinking is quite good if done before actions, but only good as damage control if done after Read More

Letter to the Editor: PRC – Urge PNM To Invest In NM

By EVAN ROHAR, Employee-Owner
Positive Energy Solar

Esteemed Public Regulations Commissioners,

My name is Evan Rohar; I am a residential solar installer working in Albuquerque for Positive Energy Solar.

I humbly request that you reject both PNM’s proposed power replacement plan for the San Juan Generating Station and the proposed rate case on economic, public health, and environmental grounds to make way for clean, renewable energies in the Land of Enchantment.

In its 2013 Commission Code of Conduct (Res. No. 01-03-13), the commission resolved to “treat the office of Commissioner as a Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thank You County Workers

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

Before I even dragged myself out of bed on New Year’s morning, I heard the snowplow go by on my street.

I have also heard that the dedicated County workers who provided this valuable service were advised to restrict their previous night New Year’s Eve celebrations in order to be prepared for the call that would come so early.

I thank them for both their service and their related self-abnegation. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Why Do We Need A Tagline?

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

The more opinions I see in the Los Alamos Daily Post about tag lines, the more I wonder why we need one, or a new one.

Personally, I have never visited–or not visited–a location because of their tag line. Are we just trying to “join the club” or do the powers-that-be think it will make us a better place to live and visit? I’ve  lived here for the better part of 55 years and I’ve never felt deprived because we didn’t have a catchy new tag line every now and then. I’ve never heard a tourist say they came here because of Read More

Letter to the Editor: Council Does NOT Support Reinstatement Of New Mexico Food Tax

By KRISTIN HENDERSON, Vice Chair
Los Alamos County Council

I saw the letter to the editor dated Dec. 27, 2014, questioning whether or not the Los Alamos County Council supports the reinstatement of a food tax in New Mexico.

I would like to be clear that the current Los Alamos County Council does NOT support the reinstatement of a food tax in New Mexico.

This has come before us twice, in deciding whether or not to support the state legislative agendas of two different organizations – the New Mexico Municipal League, and the New Mexico Association of Counties. The issue of reinstating a food tax Read More

Letter to the Editor: Taglines

By JOEL WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

While thinking of some taglines, I decided to look on the web for “popular” ones. One website lists more than 1,300 of them, which I have cleared the extraneous verbiage and hype and culled out 258 of the ones more familiar to me and posted them in a downloadable eXcel file at www.swcp.com/~jmw-mcw/258_taglines.xls.

Virginia is for Lovers is among them as you would guess. I did not find any “exponentials” among them. Many are very familiar as the result of lots of advertising $$$$$$$ spent in getting them out to you. Some are catchy, some less Read More
