Letter to the Editor: Urban Park Pétanque Court Waste of Taxpayer Money

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

Thank you, Gerald Antos, for your support of my comments about the county road work and spending practices. I have yet one more example I thought of this morning as I walked my dog in Urban Park

There is a new Pétanque court that has been built in the park at heaven-knows what cost. It’s used one day a week for one hour and I believe the largest crowd in attendance has been no more than 1-2 dozen at any given time – the larger number at a tournament.

I know it took many weeks, many man-hours, and a lot of railroad ties and gravel to build. For the two-dozen or

Letter to the Editor: Rx for New Mexico’s Children or A Prescription for Success

By FRANCINE JACOBS, MD, FAAP
Pediatrician at Deming Pediatrics

As a physician, I know that when you have a cure for an ailment, you use it. You don’t waste time, because you know that delay only makes the condition worse. New Mexico has a problem.

We’re at the bottom of nearly every indicator of child well-being. We know what works and we’re actually giving the right medicine to a few lucky kids. But most are not getting the cure, even though we know it works and we have the resources to get it to them.

Kids need more than health care. They need a comprehensive set of services that promote healthy development.

Letter to the Editor: YMCA Needs Your Help To Help Others

By LINDA DALY
Family YMCA CEO

Dear Y Friend,

Reviewing applications for financial aid is truly a humbling experience.

I communicate with each by email or telephone, and all of them share their overwhelming relief, appreciation, joy, and gratitude because the Y’s assistance has helped them, their family or children. At our Y, this is more than 200 people helped; 72 kids in camp and afterschool care, and 140 people of all ages in healthy programs.

Donors do important work. They help children access safe, supervised childcare so parents can work. I receive at least one scholarship application a Read More

Letter to the Editor: Response to Central Avenue Improvements Letter

By GERALD ANTOS
Los Alamos

In regards to Christine Weaver’s letter about construction on Central Avenue … didn’t you know it’s very rude to criticize a teenager when he is using daddy’s credit card to spend money like there is no tomorrow even if it does inconvenience absolutely everyone in the community?

It’s common knowledge that our County government has a real control issue when it comes to spending our tax dollars but to publicly confront them on it is something that they just can stand!

Since they are going to be chopping down some of the most beautiful trees in the Read More

Letter to the Editor: County Planning

By CHRISTINE WEAVER
Los Alamos

Hooray for Los Alamos County project planning office. In a town full of geniuses, it’s amazing that none of them work for the county. We will now have the two major thoroughfares in town under construction at the same time.

Trinity Drive is “supposed” to be completed by July 16, but when have we ever had a road project completed on time. The Central Avenue project is due to be completed in 60 days … RIGHT!

In the meantime, when visitors ask directions from one end of town to the other, the response will have to be, “You can’t Read More

Letter to the Editor: End of the Road, of the New Start

By LOUISA J. GILANI
Los Alamos

A long time ago, I walked by a young man sitting on the sidewalk in front of Smiths. He was obvious homeless. I gave him some money, but I did nothing else. A few days later I read how he was having a smoke where he was sleeping, and this was next to the garbage can, and it caught fire. He died in that fire.

My two small doggies went missing, I was horribly worried a coyote would get them, or they would be hurt in some way. I was so relieved when the Los Alamos Shelter had them. To shelter homeless doggies is a relief, as when left to the elements without a roof over their heads they Read More

Letter to the Editor: We, As A Community, Need To Trust Ourselves

By DAVE JONES
Former Steward of the Hive

I read, with interest, the story in the Los Alamos Daily Post regarding the Los Alamos Venture Accelerator (LAVA) initiative. I’m always keenly interested in anything that will further the success of entrepreneurs in our community.

In the story, there was unfortunately a glaring error. It stated “The groups who funded The HIVE learned that just providing “workspace” without the inclusion of mentoring, coaching and technical assistance was not a sustainable way to encourage entrepreneurs.” At the Hive, we had assembled an incredible team of Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thanks For Supporting 17th Annual Dog Jog!

By WENDEE BRUNISH and KERSTI ROCK
Co-chairs, Los Alamos Dog Jog 2014

Breezy and cool conditions greeted all of the runners and walkers and their eager dogs for the 17th Annual Dog Jog April 26.

This year’s Dog Jog raised more than $12,000 for Friends of the Shelter. Friends of the Shelter (FOS) is a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to abandoned animals, and to pets and their owners in northern New Mexico.

Our catastrophic care program pays for veterinary care for sick or injured animals that have no owners or whose owners cannot afford the treatment. Our spay/neuter Read More

Letter to the Editor: Rosebud Cafe in White Rock Deserves a Visit

By THOMAS R. HILL
Los Alamos

Every once in a while, you come across something in Los Alamos that deserves to be recognized as truly special. I believe it’s called a “shout-out” in modern management-speak.

When the Fusion Cafe closed its doors a month ago, I lost my favorite place in Los Alamos to have my usual afternoon addiction of a cup of espresso. On a whim, I dropped into the newly opened Rosebud Cafe in White Rock, next door to the Del Norte Credit Union.

I was blown away ─ easily the best espresso I’ve ever had in Los Alamos ─ maybe even better than Peet’s in San Francisco. Read More

Class of 2014 Co-Sponsors

On behalf of the Class of 2014, we would like to thank everyone who helped to make the Senior Picnic a huge success, including the parents who not only donated food items but also their time and grilling expertise.

Speaking of grilling, thank you to Superintendent Gene Schmidt and Assistant Superintendent Gerry Washburn for taking a turn flipping hamburgers and hot dogs.

Thank you also to Valynn Purvis of Party-to-Go and her staff for supplying the bouncey house and dunk tank, and to the Los Alamos Animal Shelter for introducing Read More
