Letter to the Editor: Gratitude and a Plea

By RUTH WILLIAMSON
Los Alamos

Heartfelt thanks to members and leaders of Junior Girl Scout Troop #10027 for your outstanding beautification project between the Aquatic Center and the canyon trails! It is a wonderful improvement to the area, and your efforts are greatly appreciated.

How grand it would be if this special spot, and all other areas of our community, could remain free of litter for all to enjoy! Once a week, on the daily morning dog walk, I collect a full bag of trash behind the Aquatic Center and on the trail that begins below the parking lot. (I know others do this as well.)

Letter to the Editor: Proposed Rule Changes Could Cripple Medical Cannabis Program

By GRAHAM MARK
Los Alamos

New Mexico’s Medical Cannabis Program permits people who suffer from certain debilitating medical conditions, and who otherwise qualify, to legally possess and use marijuana (cannabis).

These debilitating conditions include cancer, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)–a condition that hits veterans especially often. (The VA estimates that PTSD afflicts almost 31 percent of Vietnam veterans, 10 percent of Desert Storm veterans, 11 percent of Afghan war veterans, and 20 percent of Iraqi war veterans.)

Letter to the Editor: Reader Takes Exception With Obama Policies

By LUCILLE BONNER
Los Alamos

President Obama should be impeached for trampling on the U.S. Constitution he swore to uphold. According to the Constitution, one of the Federal government’s main purposes is “to provide for the common defense.”

President Obama’s crowning crime is arranging the questionable freedom of a Taliban-held American prisoner of war in exchange for release of five high-ranking Taliban combatants, and doing so without Congressional approval, which is an impeachable offense in itself.

How many times is the President allowed to ignore Read More

Letter to the Editor: Los Alamos Commuter Plane is the ‘Airline That Goes Out Of Their Way’

LINDA MECHEL
Toledo, Ohio

Recently I visited my daughter and her family in Los Alamos. I took the New Mexico Airlines to Albuquerque on my way home. Anyone who needs to go to Albuquerque for a trip needs to take this airline instead of driving. The people at the airport are very friendly, and the pilot went out of his way to help me.

I have trouble walking long distances and when we got to Albuquerque the people who were supposed to meet us did not show up. He went in and got a wheelchair and pushed me, along with my bags, all the way across the tarmac, and to the check in area. Can’t

The 2014 Los Alamos County Summer Concert Series is off to a great start! This past Friday night was one of our largest turnouts ever! The new stage is terrific.

Letter to the Editor: Thank You All For The Opportunities

By KATY KORKOS, manager
Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce

This is an open letter to the community, to thank you all for the opportunities that have come my way during my six years at the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.

I’ve had the opportunity to play a role on the White Rock Master Plan Implementation Committee and have volunteered with the Los Alamos Historical Society, the United Way of Northern New Mexico, and with the groups advocating on behalf of the Manhattan Project National Historic Park. I’ve been part of two planning groups, which are establishing new foundations that will benefit the local Read More

Letter to the Editor: Malicious PAC Ads

By VINCENT CHIRAVALLE
House Dist. 43 Candidate

I have received numerous phone calls from angry supporters alerting me to the fact that the New Mexico Future PAC has circulated some postcards attacking me, although disappointing it is not surprising.

Unfortunately the world of politics has become infested with PAC teams who do the dirty work by creating exaggerations, distortions and untruths to influence you, the voter, and this is seen by some as a way to win.

Those of you who know me know what I am about and what I stand for. I have been upfront on the issues and what I believe in from the beginning, Read More

Family Secrets Make Up ‘City Island’ Plot

Review by KELLY DOLEJSI

“If we only knew each other’s secrets, what comforts we should find.” So says John Churton Collins, who has nothing to do with this week’s screening at Mesa Public Library. Nevertheless, “City Island” (2009, PG-13), echoes the long-dead English literary critic’s pithy dictum.

Writer/director Raymond De Felitta’s farcical drama centers, as all good farcical dramas should, on a family. Families are always full of buffoonery and ridiculously improbable situations, and the film’s Rizzo family is Read More
