Letter to the Editor: Skeptical Images New Brand ‘Live Exponentially’ Might Convey are the Right Ones

By JAMES E. RICKMAN
Los Alamos

“Live Exponentially”?

I have no idea what that means, but it sure sounds expensive!

Yes, I get it: asking a company to come up with a community brand can be a risky endeavor. It certainly was a costly one, so I understand that the County Council may have been somewhat reluctant to admit at a public meeting that the out-of-town consulting firm’s community-marketing slogan was astoundingly bad.

But don’t we expect our community leaders to have the intestinal fortitude to stand up and admit the truth? Instead, all seven of our councilors—I suppose in an effort to try to

‘Live Exponentially’ – Close, But No Cigar

By ROBERTA RAND
St. Louis, Mo.

Let me begin by saying I am not currently a Los Alamos resident. I’ve lived here in fits and spurts for over two decades. But I love this place. With all its cultural quirkiness, neighborly charm, off-the-charts natural beauty and an unusually high concentration of Ph.D.’s, Los Alamos reminds me of Mayberry on steroids.

For years I noted the big rock on the outskirts of town with the words “Where Discoveries are Made.” A nice motto for LANL. But I’ve always believed Los Alamos offered so much more. Someone, I thought, needs to expand this town’s brand, make it attractive Read More

Letter to the Editor: Many Contribute to Play’s Success

By JIM SICILIAN
Los Alamos

Thank you for your review of LALT’s latest production (“I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”). I appreciate your praise of my efforts at directing the wonderful cast.

I want to take this opportunity to acknowledge the important contributions of my producer, Graciela Cainelli, our musical director, Gretchen Amstutz and our choreographer, Patrick MacDonald.

They are just as responsible for the excellence of this show as I. Also, the work of our two stage managers, Tami Martinson and Iain May, have made

Letter to the Editor: Opportunity to Enrich Your Life

By BOB and SUSAN FUSELIER
Los Alamos

For the past two years, Susan and I have been host parents for two amazing young adults from overseas. It is an understatement to say our lives have been greatly enriched by this opportunity. In addition to the privilege of sharing their lives for almost year, we became members of their families through Skype. The benefits to us are hard to enumerate, but include learning the customs and some of the language of those from another country, discussing our differences (some) and similarities (many), seeing the world from a different perspective, and enjoying the Read More

Letter to the Editor: How the 900 Pound Federal Gorilla Becomes King Kong that Clobbers Small Businesses

How the 900 pound Federal Gorilla becomes King Kong that Clobbers Small Businesses
By LISA CHIN

I am responding to Khal Spencer’s well written and thoughtful letter to the editor. Indeed, without the “900 pound Federal Gorilla,” my business would not have existed or grown. We definitely need “…a fruitful collaboration of good government and good business practice that creates an advantageous environment for an economy to grow.” However, many times, this collaboration becomes one-sided and government becomes a threat to small businesses with over-regulation, excessive Read More

Letter to the Editor: Thanks for the Help and Support for Joy Handsberry

By JUDY NEKIMKEN
Los Alamos

I would like to take a minute to thank those who live, work and play in the community of Los Alamos, for your generosity.

Our week of activities, to raise money for Los Alamos High School teacher Joy Handsberry, as she battles ovarian cancer, was truly inspirational. Our students, staff, parents and friends came together to lift the spirits and ease the financial burden, for one who gives so much to her students.

A special thanks to Parties to Go and owner Mrs. Purvis for providing the dunk tank at no cost and giving us an incredible discount on the bouncy house.

We have established Read More

Vincent P. Chiravalle: My View on Public Education in New Mexico

My View on Public Education in New Mexico

By VINCENT P. CHIRAVALLE
Candidate for State Representative, District 43

When our founders wrote the Constitution, they did not envision the federal government playing a heavy role in the education of our children.

Over the past 50 years, major federal intervention into local schools has expanded under the guise of improving education; however it has failed to improve academic achievement.

Instead it has eroded educational standards, disregarded parental rights, restricted and over-regulated teachers and over-tested our children. Read More

Letter to the Editor: Food Drive May 10 Benefits LA Cares, Your local Food Pantry and More…

By JEANE BUTLER
LA Cares Board Member/Food Pantry Coordinator

The National Association of Letter Carriers and Boy Scouts of America Food Drive is Saturday, May 10. They will be collecting donated canned, boxed, and dry goods from community members.

Just bag or box donated items and place them by your mailbox the morning of May 10. Our supermarkets often have case lot sales. Cases would be so helpful in filling up our nearly empty pantry. If you miss the Food Drive you may leave donated items year-round anytime during opening hours at the Aquatic Center and Los Alamos County Social Services at 1505 Read More

Letter to the Editor: Wonderful Opportunity For Los Alamos to Reexamine its Government

By BETHANY J. DOUGLAS
Los Alamos

I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Wiggins for his letter submitted April 16, 2014 in response to the editorial submitted April 13, 2014 by Mr. Chiravalle. These gentlemen present a wonderful opportunity to the community of Los Alamos to reexamine the purpose and significance of our government.

Mr. Chiravalle exhorted our state government to “get out of the way of job creators.” Mr. Wiggins quickly rebuked Mr. Chiravalle by passionately claiming,” … in the United States, the people are the government.” Such a sentiment is about Read More

Letter to the Editor: Creating Jobs: Is It Really Business vs. Government?

By KHAL SPENCER
Los Alamos

43rd District GOP candidate Vincent Chiravalle and others, one here have recently batted back and forth the idea of job creation and whether Government is involved in a constructive or negative way. I think both sides miss the point a little, or perhaps their letters are not long enough to elaborate.

First off, its rather hilarious to think that in little Los Alamos County, government does not create jobs. Without that 900 pound Federal gorilla in town redistributing other people’s tax dollars (Vince and I both work there), “…the woman who
