Letter to the Editor: Government Doesn’t Create Jobs, Businesses Do

By VINCENT P. CHIRAVALLE
Candidate for State Representative, Dist. 43

It is not true that I want to remove all government regulations as Mr. Wiggins suggests (see April 16 letter here). I support common sense regulations that protect our citizens.

Government doesn’t create jobs. Businesses create jobs. We need solutions that will grow our private sector economy, not ones that will add to the size of government.

Businesses come in all shapes and sizes. When I talk about “business owners,” I’m talking about the woman who does your nails, the local organic farmer, artists and musicians, Read More

Letter to the Editor: Anyone Who Signs the Front of a Paycheck Understands…

BILL DUNN
Los Alamos

I believe Mr. Wiggins missed Mr. Chiravelle’s point in his Letter to the Editor dated April 16 (see letter here). Anyone who signs the front of a paycheck understands the requirements governments place on businesses are burden and growing.

I am a small business owner based in Los Alamos. As a small business owner I must file monthly, quarterly and annual reports and make payments to Los Alamos County, NM Taxation and Revenue for gross receipts, NM T&R for payroll taxes, NM Department of Labor, NM PRC, the US treasury, and Social Security. A late report, incorrectly Read More

Letter to the Editor: Don’t Want to Arrive at Work a Wet Mess

A Morning Commuter
Los Alamos

To the management of Caballo Peak Apartments:

Every morning, around 6:30 a.m., I walk to the bus stop located below your apartments on Canyon Road. Recently, the sprinkler systems have been on and continuously spraying water on the sidewalk and the street/bike lane; the vegetation remains brown due to the poor aiming. Either the sprinkler heads need replaced or serviced or a repositioning is in order.

Please be more considerate of the water that is being wasted and the pedestrians and cyclists who are making their way to work in the morning. I don’t like having to walk Read More

Letter to the Editor: Details of Personal Experience With Los Alamos Phone Scammer

Public Service Alert
Los Alamos Resident

I got a call yesterday afternoon from a Lt. Carl Lewis stating that I (he gave me my address as well) had failed to report for jury duty, and that I had fines of ~$423 for failure to appear, ~$415 for contempt of court, and a $177 court processing fee (roughly $1,000 dollars).

He was actually very convincing and talked with a thick southern drawl, and when I mentioned I never got informed of jury duty he had quick authoritative responses, mentioned how he wasn’t there to dispute the charges, just inform me of my rights and that

Letter to the Editor: Sharing Necessary Information

By LINDA GOFORTH
Los Alamos

For the public and for Historical Society members specifically, I have received some valuable feedback from my previous letter (see letter here) that contained the suggestion that Certified Preservationists were not being consulted.

A lack of trust among people in the same genre of interests, such as the history of the area can be remedied by the equal sharing of information so that those who donate funds, and those who advise the County Council are aware of their shared concerns. When trusted people begin to complain on the basis of withheld (not intending secretive Read More

Letter to the Editor: In the United States, the People Are the Government

By GERRY WIGGINS
Los Alamos

Mr. Vincent Chiravalle recently wrote a letter to your paper suggesting that, “When government gets out of the way, we can compete and win in any industry” and “To get our economy moving and creating jobs, government simply must get out of the way of the job creators.”

Sadly, Mr. Chiravalle is forgetting that in the United States, the people are the government. Our laws and regulations have been passed through due process, supported by democratic votes, and are often in place to protect us from the abuses of industry.

It seems that Mr. Chiravalle suggesting that if we vote Read More

Pegg: Crank Up Your Metabolism

Crank Up Your Metabolism
By KENT PEGG

One of the key factors to weight loss and weight management is your metabolism. If you are want to lose weight and keep the weight off, one important thing to do is to rev up your metabolism.

Metabolism is a term that refers to how your body transforms the calories in the food you eat into energy. The food is broken down into sugars and amino acids that the body then has available for use as energy. The energy is then either used or it is stored as muscle or fat.

One very important key to keeping your metabolism high is to have a large amount of lean muscle mass. Lean muscle Read More

Letter to the Editor: Miracles Have Been Documented In This Enchanted Land

By LIDDIE F. MARTINEZ, President
LANL Major Subcontractor Consortium

In these times of partisan politics and declining budgets it is rare to see our elected leadership come together and stand united on any issue; in fact, it is unheard of. But this is New Mexico and miracles have been documented before in this Enchanted Land.

Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard facilitated this miracle by successfully sponsoring House Memorial #79 calling for collaboration and coordination on a state-wide level to support, maintain and increase local business procurement by federal institutions.

Letter to the Editor: I Commend Those Who Have Worked on Charter Review

By LINDA GOFORTH
Los Alamos

I want to commend those who have worked on the Charter Review after reading it. Since I’ll not be able to attend the meeting, I want to say a few words of reflection.

I spent 12 years of my life with others on the efforts to establish, what became the FL/HDABoard, which advises the County Council about historical preservation in specific ways usually. I have made blunders in my life, but in those years gave an ethical service, and we who served set groundwork for a love of Los Alamos in all of its historic and present day periods.

In the Charter Review there is a recommendation

AT Tax Time Don’t Forget How Corporate Income Tax Breaks Impact Your Tax Bill

By GERRY BRADLEY, MA
Senior Researcher and Policy Analyst
New Mexico Voices for Children

In mid-April, as we prepare our income tax returns, it’s likely we equate the amount of tax we owe with how much money we make and how many deductions we can take.

In truth, what we pay in all taxes, including income taxes, is dependent on many other variables, such as how much—or how little—profitable corporations are paying.

Corporate America is very good at lowering its income tax bills. It has been so successful, in fact, that corporate income taxes (CIT) make up a much smaller share of total federal tax revenue Read More
