Letter to the Editor: Lucky To Have You All

By Sarah G. Rochester, Executive Director
Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Service

Dear Friends:

What a wonderful community we live and work in. As we waited for spring to come, the community was filled with vases of daffodils and bunches of daffodils were delivered to homes by wonderful volunteers.

Each bunch of daffodils (2,500 this year) supports our hospice program and all profits from the sale go to direct patient care.

We thank you all for your wonderful support. Your daffodils became a gift to many.

Letter to the Editor: Roundabout Announced on Day of Jokes

By JOEL WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

After six years of County-caused delay, the state will now begin to redo N.M. 502, if only for the segment from Knecht Street to Canyon Road.

I am sure the experienced state designers will produce a fine working design from the conceptual one.

It was appropriate that NMDoT’s press release, which indicated that the County Council’s desired roundabout at Central Avenue be included, should be made on April Fool’s Day – a day of jokes.

Letter to the Editor: Let’s Lead By Example

By Dave Thomson
Los Alamos

Referring to Tom Ribe quote published in the April 2, 2013 edition of the Los Alamos Daily Post:

“Los Alamos’ power supply is vulnerable and unreliable and should be produced in Los Alamos, using a combination of energy conservation and green power,”
Ribe said. “Los Alamos has a moral and technological responsibility to lead by example in this area given that it is a taxpayer funded facility of the U.S. Department of Energy.”

I completely agree, and propose that on the second Wednesday of every month, from midnight to midnight, Read More

Letter to the Editor: Ideas to Attract Visitors

By Sue King
Los Alamos

Here are a few ideas that would bring visitors to Los Alamos, no matter what the slogan is:

  • Build an affordable attractive rustic lodge with a choice of dormitory or family units, a shared kitchen, gathering places, like a hostel; offering talks, activities, and information on trails, recreation, history, and other attractions.
  • Train trail guides and offer themed guided bike or walking trips in the summer and fall, transportation from a central point, and possibly lunch. These could be at several levels of difficulty.
  • Provide a package deal for visitors to include reduced

Letter to the Editor: Why Los Alamos Needs a Full Indust-Tech Incubator

By Bill Sellers
VP, Los Alamos Entrepreneurs Network

On its way to the Governor’s office for a signature is freshman Carl Trujillo’s bill #401a, which stipulates an incentive for the State Investment Council to deliberately seek out and invest in [NM-based] companies arising from the technology transfer efforts of our national labs.

I might note Trujillo is from Santa Fe County, where there is an already existing incubator, and an effective support network for start-up incubation.

They are focused, not diluting their efforts trying to be jacks-of-all trades, like other

Letter to the Editor: Over-intervention Instills Culture of Fear in Children

By REID PRIEDHORSKY
Los Alamos

I read (Superintendent) Gene Schmidt’s recent letter with some concern.

On the one hand, of course we should keep our children safe in school.

But on the other hand, we must continually ask of our policies: At what cost? And what is the real goal? (It is: help children build themselves into independent, successful adults.)

Over-intervention instills a culture of fear in children and can disrupt development and destroy futures.

I myself had two issues at LAHS that today would, it seems, be made into Very Big Deals, but at the time (late 90’s)

Letter to the Editor: Student Safety is Non-negotiable

By Dr. GENE SCHMIDT
LAPS Superintendent

In the past two weeks, three middle school students were disciplined for bringing knives to school.

These incidents were reported in the local media as “deadly weapons.” The Los Alamos School Board has established very strict policies regarding weapons on campus to ensure student safety at all times.

By school policy definition, any item or device which may be used as a weapon, including pocket knives (regardless of size) are considered weapons.

By school policy definition, any weapon which is capable of producing death or great bodily harm is Read More

Letter to the Editor: Generous Support Greatly Appreciated

By LINDA HULL, President
Rotary Club of Los Alamos

Once again, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, I would like to thank our many friends in the community for their recent support of this month’s Cowboy Pancake Breakfast, which benefited our Club’s local and international projects.

More than 250 tickets were sold to the hungry breakfast crowd Sunday morning.

Letter to the Editor: Beer Co-op Plans Brewery and Taproom

MICHELINE DEVAURS
President, Los Alamos Beer Cooperative
Los Alamos

In his March 7 letter to the editor, (“White Rock Needs a Pub”) Jon Hicks asks if there are any hopes for a local bar where patrons can enjoy a pint of beer and a quiet conversation without having to compete with big screen TVs and sportscasts blaring at full volume.

Well, I am happy to report that there is, in fact, a hope for just this sort of establishment in either White Rock or Los Alamos, or both.

But it is up to the citizens of Los Alamos County to help make the vision a reality.

The mission of the Los Alamos Beer Cooperative is to establish Read More
