Letter to the Editor: White Rock Needs a Pub

Jon Hicks
White Rock
In White Rock we can get booze at three different places: Smith’s, the gas stations and Bandelier Grill with a meal.

I wonder if White Rock is the only community in New Mexico that doesn’t support a local bar?

We need some where that we can have a beer (not a six pack) and quiet conversation without four largescreen tv screens blaring the latest game at maximum volume.

I wonder if there are any hopes? Read More

Letter to the Editor: Frustrated With Transportation-Related Issues

R. Wayne Hardie
Los Alamos

I have lived in Los Alamos County (LAC) for 34 years and just completed a term as a member of LAC’s Transportation Board, so I have considerable interest in, and considerable frustration with, LAC transportation-related issues.

In my opinion, the current kerfuffle over the “N.M. 502-Trinity Drive Transportation Improvement Project” is the result of yet the latest in a long list of mismanaged LAC road and street projects over the past several years as summarized below:

1. Diamond Drive: LAC/Public Works proposed a multi-roundabout

Letter to the Editor: A Person’s Opinion Does Not a Fact Make

By JANIE O’ROURKE

Opinions – we all have them and we are very attached to them. But a person’s opinion does not a fact make.

An opinion worth having should be supported by facts. I recently read a couple of letters in the Monitor and Los Alamos Daily Post that were filled with very strong opinions regarding Trinity Drive and roundabouts.

How should we judge these opinions? First let’s look at the facts regarding roundabouts as published by reputable and mainstream engineering organizations.

As an example, the Federal Highway Administration sponsored a study to determine

Letter to the Editor: On Hyping Roundabouts

BY JOEL M. WILLIAMS
Los Alamos

Recently, Councilor Kristin Henderson stated (Los Alamos Daily Post Feb. 23) that “And yes, the federal and state highway people are all good with a roundabout. New Mexico just put one in on the bypass.

There has been no roundabout put on the N.M. 599 bypass. The roundabouts are on a low-traffic, feeder road on either side of the bypass and not on N.M. 599 itself.

And while it is considering the County’s desire to have a roundabout at Central Avenue, NMDOT has long been on-record favoring a signalized intersection there.

Letter to the Editor: Rotary Thanks Community

Linda Hull, president
The Rotary Club of Los Alamos

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Los Alamos, I would like to thank the community for its outstanding support of our fourth annual Crab Fest held recently at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Although our final tally has not been tabulated yet, our fund-raiser exceeded expectations. With the money raised, we will once again be able to give academic and vocational awards to high school students, and this year we will also be able to purchase an automatic external defibrillator (AED) for Fuller Lodge, Read More

Letter to the Editor: Support Fire Arms Transfer Act

BY MIRANDA VISCOLI

In the next week, our senate will vote on Rep. Miguel Garcia’s House Bill 77, also known as the Fire Arms Transfer Act.

The bill would require background checks at gun shows. It has received bipartisan support in the House of Representatives and Gov. Susana Martinez has said she would sign the bill.

In New Mexico today, anyone can sell a gun at a gun show. You are not even required to ask if that person is a felon.

Whether they have been convicted of domestic violence, are a fugitive from the law or restricted from owning a gun because they are considered dangerously mentally Read More

Letter to the Editor: On Affordable Housing

By DAVE THOMSON
Los Alamos

Once more the county is injecting itself into an area were they have no business – the old canard that we need more government-sponsored affordable housing to assure our economic prosperity.

Back to Economics 101. The COST of housing is based on the cost of its economic inputs; that is, land, labor, materials, and capital.

The PRICE of housing is established in an auction market between a willing buyer and a willing seller. As the run-up and collapse of the recent housing bubble illustrate, the two are only loosely linked.

Letter to the Editor: N.M. 502 18 MPH?

By WILLIAM C. MEAD
Los Alamos

The New Mexico Department of Transportation held an open house Feb. 20 to solicit comments on the latest conceptual design for N.M. 502.

This might be the last opportunity for public comment on the major features of the road. I didn’t count, but I’d guess there were roughly 50-75 people in attendance.

That seems like a pretty small sample on which to base a decision that affects everyone in Los Alamos (though less so for White Rock residents.)

I think the single design feature that most determines the nature and quality of the road is the proposed roundabout Read More

Letter to the Editor: Lucky We Live in Los Alamos!

By Khalil J. Spencer
League of American Bicyclists

Thank You!

I was riding the singletrack out to the end of Kwage Mesa this morning (Feb. 18) and stopped to take a picture.

In the process, I dropped the Blackberry and had to clean off all the dust.

Unbeknown to me, I also dropped my driver’s license when I reached down to pick up the Blackberry. Later on in the ride, I again pulled out the Blackberry to shoot another picture and noted the license was missing.

Tracing back my ride to where I had dropped the Blackberry, there was nothing on the ground. I hoped someone Read More

Letter to the Editor: ‘CIPs: Move Forward Responsibly’

By Pete Sheehey
Los Alamos County Councilor

It became clear in December 2012 that our net county tax revenues for fiscal year (FY) 2013 would be about $9 million less than initially projected.

We can make up half of that shortfall by economizing on county operations. The County has maintained reserves of 25 percent of yearly revenues, about $15 million, to deal with such problems.

So why not go ahead with our original spending plans, and just dip into reserves for the other half of the shortage? The answer is that this is potentially not a single-year budget problem.

Estimated revenues Read More
