Letter To The Editor: Let’s Take American Promise Pledge

By ADELAIDE JACOBSON
Los Alamos

Though 2020 is a very different campaign season for political candidates there is one unfortunate constant to running for political office in the United States regardless of the year, the necessity to raise money and, increasingly, large sums of money.

Since the 2010 US Supreme Court decision in Citizens United, campaign contributions and spending increasingly come not from individual citizens, but from political action committees (PACs) and independent expenditure action committees (Super PACs) whose donors may be disclosed, or not, depending on the Read More

Letter To The Editor: Developing COVID-19 Immunity

BY JOHN DAVEY
Los Alamos

Los Alamos Community,

I am frustrated by our government’s (federal, state, and local) lack of leadership on dealing with the communication of the scientific reality of this pandemic.

I see on TV media hour by hour tabulation of numbers infected and numbers of deaths. I’ve watched Federal and State governmental representatives declaring we are on top of the virus by showing the infection rate going down in certain states.

In reality, we are not “on top of the virus” but rather we are simply slowing the spread of this contagious virus in some states. Being “on top of the virus” Read More

Letter To The Editor: Owners Of Vandalized Business Thank Community, Chamber And Others For Support

By Peter Nguyen and Nina Pham
Owners of Top Nail & Spa
Mari-Mac Shopping Center

Top Nail & Spa were among the victims of the March 29 crime spree that hit seven local businesses in Los Alamos.

The Los Alamos community rallied to support these businesses after the break-ins. We at Top Nails appreciate the efforts of the community, LACDC, Los Alamos Main Street and Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce.

The attack couldn’t have come at a worse time when businesses across Los Alamos were already struggling with closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We truly appreciate how the Los Alamos community Read More

Letter To The Editor: Preeminent Science Lab Ignores Basic Health Science

By RICHARD BONNER
Concerned Citizen

We are visiting Los Alamos while full-time living in our motorhome and responsibly “social distancing” as we travel.

While camped at the White Rock Visitor Center last evening, we drove to see the town of Los Alamos and around the Highway 501 to State Road 4 loop through Bandelier Monument and back to White Rock.

Doing so required us to drive through a security check point on the west side of Los Alamos. How ironic and disturbing that one of our country’s preeminent science laboratories requires users of a public road to come face to face with a young security guard Read More

Letter To The Editor: Controlled Nuclear Fusion Not Reached

By JASON HAGLER
Los Alamos

This is a comment on your recent piece on nuclear fusion. It was misleading in one respect. Both in the title and in the text, it stated that this research was an important step toward the practical use of controlled nuclear fusion.

In fact, we are no closer to that goal then we were 60 years ago. The article reported on an important study of plasma physics, but the study made no impact on reaching the goal of electrical energy from fusion. The reason is that fusion has to occur at millions of degrees and the temperature to produce electrical power is many orders of magnitude less. Read More

Letter To The Editor: Equally Important For Council Candidates – Record Of Leadership Skills; Good Judgement

By ED BIRNBAUM
Los Alamos

The three qualifications for County Council candidates listed in Aaron Walker’s May 7th letter to the LA Daily Post, i.e., “Empathy, Integrity, and Listening”, (link) are indeed important, but equally important is having a record that demonstrates leadership skills and good judgement.

Whether the candidate has held a leadership position at LANL, or has had experience running a small business or managing an organization with multiple employees, individuals with these kind of backgrounds will have had to have made frequent personnel and budget decisions, as well Read More

Letter To The Editor: What Qualifies A Person For Council?

By AARON WALKER
White Rock

After listening to the Democratic council candidates speak during the League of Women Voters forum, I was left with a glaring question: What makes someone a competent and decent public official?

The candidates touted their accomplishments at the lab, the military, and small business ownership as some of the things that “qualify” them to be county councilors. Do these things qualify someone to be an elected official?

Working at the lab does not provide any real benefit or qualification towards being a county councilor. Being in a leadership position at the lab and being Read More
