Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Exceptionally Qualified To Serve Our District In State Legislature

By JEAN DEWART

Los Alamos

Los Alamos is extremely fortunate to have a candidate who is exceptionally qualified to serve our district in the state legislature: Christine Chandler.

Christine’s background as an attorney for Los Alamos National Laboratory, as a Los Alamos County Councilor and as a committee analyst for the New Mexico State Legislature have given her unique strengths to represent our County and the citizens of New Mexico.

To effectively move our state forward, on issues of education, health care and environmental protection, New Mexicans need skilled leaders Read More

Letter To The Editor: Leagues Forums Offer Opportunity For Closer Look At Candidates

By Barbara Calef and Becky Shankland
Co-Presidents
League of Women Voters of Los Alamos

In the June 5 primary voters who are registered as Democrats, Republicans or Libertarians will be offered the opportunity to vote for candidates in their party.

Many of the positions are uncontested within each party. For instance, although there are four open seats, there is only one Libertarian candidate for County Council.

The League of Women Voters cordially invites voters to attend two candidate forums to hear the positions of candidates who are opposed within their own party in the June Read More

Letter To The Editor: Thoughtful And Clearheaded

By DIANE SENIOR
Madrid, NM

District Court Judge Greg Shaffer was Santa Fe County Attorney in 2014 when the La Bajada Mesa basalt mine application came before the Board of County Commissioners (BCC).

As a leading opponent of the application, I observed Greg at public hearings. In responding to questions from the BCC and the public, Greg was thoughtful and able to clearly articulate the basis for his opinions. Although I was not privy to it, his advice to the BCC appears to have been similarly thoughtful and clearheaded.

The BCC enacted a moratorium

Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Will Work Hard In NM District 43

By KELLY & STEVE MYERS
Los Alamos

We would vote for Christine Chandler just based on her education, training and experience alone, but she offers so much more to her constituents in NM District 43.

Christine is incredibly intelligent and we need brains in our state government. Her legal experience is extensive, working in the legal department at LANL, serving as Probate Judge in Los Alamos County, working as a legislative analyst in Santa Fe and Washington, D.C. and leading Los Alamos County as an elected County Councilor, serving in the late 90’s and early 2000 and again from

Letter To The Editor: James Robinson For Los Alamos County Council

By MIKE LATHROP
Retired LANL

I believe James Robinson would excel as a member of the County Council. My beliefs are based on extensive hours of personal contact, rather than touted credentials or experience that can be found elsewhere (https:////www.vote-robinson.com/).

In 2009 I became James’ LANL Student Intern Mentor. My mentorship strategy, be it for post graduates or under graduates, has always been “sink or swim”. By assigning unfamiliar tasks, that should be obtainable, I assess my intern’s problem solving abilities. To my delight James, my only undergraduate

Letter To The Editor: Keep Judge Greg Shaffer

By FRANK KATZ
Formerly City Attorney
City of Santa Fe

I support District Court Judge Greg Shaffer because he has the right experience for the job. Division II is a civil division, meaning that it generally does not handle criminal or domestic relation matters. Judge Shaffer has over 20 years of diverse civil experience, as a litigator at a national law firm, a public servant in New Mexico, and a civil judge.

Most recently, Greg was Santa Fe County Attorney for three and one-half years before he became a judge. I know from my own experience that being chief counsel

Letter To The Editor: Christine Exemplifies Experience, Values, Priorities Needed For Positive Change

By WENDEE BRUNISH
Los Alamos

I am writing to strongly endorse Christine Chandler’s candidacy for State Representative in District 43. Christine exemplifies the experience, values and priorities that we need in this position to make a positive difference for the people of New Mexico.

I have known Christine for over 20 years and first became familiar with her work through the League of Women Voters of Los Alamos. Her extensive experience with the County Council, including her current position as vice-chair, as well as her work as a legislative analyst for the State Legislature makes her the most Read More

Letter To The Editor: Our Struttin’ Pistol Packin’ Sheriff

By R. WAYNE HARDIE
Los Alamos

When Marco Lucero was first elected, I used to observe the antics of our pistol packin’ sheriff with amusement as he strutted around Los Alamos like he was Sheriff Longmire when in fact he reminds me more of Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife (youngsters, google “The Andy Griffith Show”). However, his continual lawsuits against the county aren’t so funny anymore because, even though they are frivolous, they are costing Los Alamos County time and money to defend.

And for at least the past two years Sheriff Lucero has proposed a budget for his department of almost Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sara Scott Is An Excellent Choice For Los Alamos County Council

By DOUG REILLY
Los Alamos

I believe Sara Scott would be an excellent member of the County Council. She has worked over 23 years (1989 – 2013) at LANL in a variety of scientific and leadership positions.

I first met Sara when she became Program Manager for Nonproliferation and Arms Control that’s responsible for programs in nuclear safeguards and nonproliferation, where I worked. My son, also a chemist, worked with Sara at DP-Site when she first joined the Lab.

Sara’s been active in community work including sewing and baking for dance recitals, serving

Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Is Another Great Candidate For The Environment

By MARK JONES
Former Chair
Sierra Club Pajarito Group

I was disappointed to learn that the Rio Grande (New Mexico) Chapter of the Sierra Club chose to make an endorsement in the competitive Democratic Primary for State House District 43 despite both candidates having an excellent record on our issues.

I have served on the Executive Committee of the Rio Grande Chapter, and as chair of the local Pajarito Group of the Sierra Club. I served two terms on the County Sustainability Board and am a member and supporter of at least 15 other environmental organizations.

Environmental issues are extremely Read More
