Letter To The Editor: One Comment And A Quibble About Fr. Glenn’s Latest Column

By TERRY GOLDMAN
Los Alamos

Fr. Glenn’s most recent column (link) is quite a good read, but I have one ‘quibble’ and one comment:

He writes, ‘… science sees its effects and thus “has Faith” that it exists’. This represents a classic misunderstanding of science. It does not ‘have faith’ that dark matter exists.

Science currently considers it plausible and even likely that dark matter exists, but science always has doubts about its conclusions and tests them wherever possible. That is, science is always ready to change its conclusions Read More

Letter To The Editor: Christine Chandler Listens To Young Professionals … Gives Voice To Marginalized Citizens

By Tina DeYoe
Los Alamos

As a young professional in the Los Alamos community working in the nonprofit sector, I support Christine Chandler for House District 43’s State Representative.

Christine has done a great job as one of our Los Alamos County Councilor. She understands and listens to concerns that young professionals have including the need for affordable housing, green energy initiatives, the importance of lifting up the voices of women in society, and acceptance of diversity and differing perspectives.

Last year, I had the fortunate opportunity of participating in a book discussion Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pete Sheehey For Dist. 43

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

I support Pete Sheehey as the best candidate to serve District 43 in the State Legislature. A person in public office must enter the decision-making process with not only personal values and a commitment to those values, but the ability to make policy that represents both the District and the Big Picture.

For many years, Pete has been showing up at meetings, marches and community events. He pays attention and asks the right questions to inform his decisions. He studies the issues. Pete has traveled this diverse District, visiting multiple communities to talk to people Read More

Letter To The Editor: Pete Sheehey Will Listen To And Work Hard For Us As State Representative

By HOWARD N. BARNUM
Los Alamos

I’m writing to share my reasons for supporting Peter T. Sheehey’s candidacy for our State Representative for District 43 and to urge district voters to support him in the upcoming Democratic primary, and in the fall election should he be chosen as the Democratic candidate.

Pete has worked tirelessly as County Councilor to carefully research issues before the council, and to reach out to community members to take into account their concerns and take advantage of their knowledge and expertise. As a friend and supporter of Pete’s for many years, I’ve observed the joy Read More

Sen. Martinez Endorses Christine Chandler

By RICHARD MARTINEZ
New Mexico Senate, Dist. 5

I am proud to endorse Christine Chandler for New Mexico House of Representatives, District 43, which includes Los Alamos and parts of Rio Arriba, Sandoval, and Santa Fe Counties.

As Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I’ve had the pleasure of hiring and working with Christine as a legislative analyst for four out of the last five sessions. Her legal expertise and analytical capabilities are outstanding, but more important, her knowledge of the legislative process and her relationships are what make her the best choice to represent Read More

Letter To The Editor: Opposition To Proposed Flow Trail Location

By CAROL BRONISZ
Los Alamos

I am writing in regard to the proposed flow trail. A flow trail is a high speed, no-stop trail. The proposed flow trail crosses and closely parallels (within 3 feet) existing high-traffic trails.

Hikers (including children), joggers, runners, dog walkers and horseback riders currently use the Bayo canyon trails. Adding high speed, no-stop bicycles is an accident waiting to happen.

As it is, mountain bikers use these trails, but they are generally courteous and will stop and wait for other trail users if necessary. Even so, I personally

Letter To The Editor: Legitimate Safety Concerns

By LYNN HANRAHAN
Los Alamos

Probably 20 years ago or so I remember reading a letter to the editor of our local paper written by a prominent citizen who was moving away. He was happy to be moving on but ambivalent, too, writing that he would miss Los Alamos because it was maybe the only place where something as insignificant as the moving of a crosswalk could lead to social unrest.

It was a place where little things mattered — a lot. Yesterday an old friend called and wanted to meet for a walk. We are the last two members of the Walnut Street Playgroup, which disbanded last spring after almost twenty Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sheriff Controversy Enters Litigation Phase

By GEORGE CHANDLER
Los Alamos

The Sheriff controversy is now in the litigation phase and it appears a decision approaches on actions filed by the Sheriff and the County, which have been consolidated into one action. In a nutshell, the Sheriff asks the court for an injunction requiring the county to fully fund a second law enforcement agency in Los Alamos County, and the County seeks an injunction preventing the Sheriff from performing any law enforcement duties. In the hope I can shed some light on the issues, I offer a brief summary.

The Sheriff’s position has always been that state law and the constitution Read More

Letter To The Editor: R. Wayne Hardy Should Respect Sheriff And Voters

By JOSE CORRENO, MBA
Independent, soon-to-declare council candidate

In a recent letter to the editor, R. Wayne Hardy had some very harsh things to say about Sheriff Marco Lucero. Mr. Hardy said he would “…observe the antics of our pistol packin’ sheriff with amusement…” and that Sheriff Lucero reminded him of “Deputy Sheriff Barney Fife”.

He also stated that he was surprised Sheriff Lucero didn’t include in his budget request to Council “…for the purchase and upkeep of a horse or two” while “he was wearing his side-arm during his presentation…”.

The tone and content of Mr.
