NEA-NM President Betty Patterson On National Teacher Appreciation Week

By BETTY PATTERSON, President
NEA-New Mexico

This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. We have wonderful Teacher’s, and Education Employees! We need to celebrate the incredible teaching happening all over New Mexico.

New Mexico has more students graduating and better test results, thanks to teachers!

Everyday teachers give of themselves and their small paychecks. Gena in the South Valley supplies snacks and fruit so her students are not hungry. Sylvia in Las Cruces helps students learn English. Rosemary in Carlsbad helps families find food and homes and clothing for school Read More

Letter To The Editor: A Quick Comment On The REC Bond Discussion

By RALPH CHAPMAN
Los Alamos

Just a few quick notes on this REC Bond thingy. There have been some solid arguments made by members on both sides of the issue. Khalil Spencer’s comments against voting Yes were, not surprisingly or unusually, strong and well thought out. The large number of comments made in favor of voting Yes also make strong points about the effect of the Bond on the long-term health and vitality of the County. So, there is good reason to have a useful and civil discussion of this issue.

How I voted actually anticipated a comment suggesting we look at this from an entrepreneurial aspect Read More

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Sen. Tom Udall issued the following statement after the Senate voted 49-51, defeating a measure to repeal the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) natural gas waste prevention rule through the Congressional Review Act (CRA). Udall helped lead the fight against the repeal.

“This is a victory for taxpayers and school children in New Mexico — because we were able to fend off this dangerous repeal, New Mexico will continue to benefit from the BLM’s commonsense

Letter To The Editor: Recreation Bond IS Justified

By Robbie and Michelle Harris
Los Alamos

We were disappointed with Robert Gibson’s recent column (link) that the Recreation Bond Is Not Justified. Our family is very involved with Little League and high school fast pitch softball programs. A half century ago, women’s fast pitch softball was not recognized as a high school or collegiate sport. In 1972 Congress passed the Educational Amendments. One section of this law, Title IX, prohibits discrimination against girls and women in federally-funded education, including in athletics programs. This law helped pave the way of offsetting Read More

Ben-Naim: Vote Yes On Rec Bond – Don’t Let Perfect Be The Enemy Of Very Good

By Ellen Ben-Naim
Los Alamos

I am writing in support of the Rec Bond. After a year and a half of public meetings and countless hours of staff and volunteer research and planning, the county has put together a well thought out package of recreation projects.

These facilities will help meet the needs of young families, student athletes and adults of all ages. They also will help increase our property values, benefit our schools and make Los Alamos a more attractive place to live for new hires to the Lab.

I believe passing the recreation bond will help move Los Alamos County forward. It’s very unlikely Read More

Letter To The Editor: Horne On Rec Bond

By JOHN N. HORNE
Los Alamos

I would like to add my name to the list of people who are opposed to the recreation bond. On May 5, Carolyn Roberts wrote an excellent assessment of the problems with this bond issue and I am in complete agreement with the points she has made.

The most important of these points is the following: “If something adverse happens at LANL or another fire devastates our community, WE, the property owners, are still responsible for paying this debt back. Additionally, if the projected recovery percentages fall short, Los Alamos County can, again, raise our property taxes to repay Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos County’s Fiscal Predicament – Vote Against Rec Bond

By LISA BRENNER, Vice President
A Better Way For LA PAC

No one likes to rain on anyone’s parade but I think we need a bit of a reality check on the Rec Bond issue. There are so many reasons to vote AGAINST this bond.  Here are a few:

Los Alamos County is not in a good predicament money-wise. Presently we have a $1,400,000 shortfall for this budget year due to the LANL contract’s limbo status. I hope everyone realizes that the windfall we’ve received from a for-profit company winning the last contract is what has funded our new Municipal Building, the Justice Center, the White Rock Library and other
