Letter To The Editor: You Can’t Drown New Mexico’s Bureaucracy In A Bathtub

By PAUL J. GESSING
Los Alamos

New Mexico’s Legislative Finance Committee recently issued a report that, to the casual observer, might indicate that the state bureaucracy in the Land of Enchantment has been “cut to the bone” due to recent budget issues.

It may be true as the LFC says that the ranks of state employees have shrunk to the lowest level in almost a decade. What is definitely true is that more cuts are ahead due to the dire budget situation and the weak rebound in oil and gas prices. According to the LFC report, the number of state employees

Letter To The Editor: Stover Lowered Taxes And Advanced Clean Energy

By ROBERT GIBSON
Former Los Alamos County Councilor

An intense political advertising campaign totally misrepresents elements of Sharon Stover’s public service record. I’d like to set the record straight on two issues that occurred while I was on the County Council with Sharon.

First, Sharon voted for the biggest tax DECREASE in County history, exactly the opposite of what the ads claim. The “biggest increase” referencedwas proposed by the School Board and approved by voters in 2009 to start the long-delayed renovation and remodeling of our public schools. Council played no role in deciding Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter Endorses Pete Sheehey For Los Alamos County Council

By Chapter Political Chair Susan Martin, and
Pajarito Group Chair Jody Benson

The most powerful way to protect our water, wildlife, land and climate
is through good environmental policy, and the most powerful way to ensure good policy is by electing pro-environment candidates.

The Sierra Club Rio Grande Chapter sends questionnaires to and interviews eligible candidates, and two chapter committees must approve every endorsement by a two-thirds vote in order for a candidate to be endorsed. (Incumbents can be judged by their public record rather than a questionnaire.)It is with an assessment

Letter To The Editor: Why You Should Vote For Trump

By JODY BENSON
Los Alamos

Representative democracy is a failed system.  Decades ago, Republicans subscribed to Reagan, our second greatest president’s warning, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

The Tea Party embraces this suspicion, and now controls Congress to daily prove that suspicion correct.

It is exactly this incompetent Congress and inept President that give the rational as to why you should vote for Donald Trump for President. Mr. Trump has promised to shake up government by using his deal-making expertise Read More

Letter To The Editor: Vote For Sharon Stover

By EMILY MCGAY
Los Alamos

I have known Sharon Stover for over 25 years, most closely in YMCA work when I was the director. She worked tirelessly to help us get corporate sponsors for the Y’s annual fundraising event and continues that volunteer effort to this day! She was instrumental in getting her political allies in Espanola to assist in the formation of the Y’s Teen Center in the Valley, which is having such a positive and inspiring impact on the youth it serves. Ditto with the Teen Center in Los Alamos.

I have followed Sharon’s good works over the many years that we have shared a friendship. She was Read More

Letter To The Editor: Is Marco Lucero A ‘Constitutional Sheriff?’

By STEPHANIE NAKHLEH
Los Alamos

Before the question of abolishing the Office of the Los Alamos County Sheriff came up, I was unaware of an organization known as the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA). Although its name sounds innocuous, CSPOA is in reality a radical association with a troubling history—and Sheriff Marco Lucero appears to be part of it.

CSPOA was formed in 2011 by an Arizona sheriff named Richard Mack. Mack and CSPOA don’t merely claim that sheriffs are duty-bound to uphold the US Constitution, they claim that sheriffs are the highest law-enforcement Read More

Letter To The Editor: Why I’m Supporting Chris Chandler For Los Alamos County Council

By MARK JONES
Los Alamos

I strongly encourage Los Alamos citizens to vote for Chris Chandler for Los Alamos County Council. I have known and worked with Chris for years and have great respect for her abilities and judgment.

Her dedication to the community is shown by her previous service on the county council, the planning and zoning commission, and charter review committees. She is a hard worker who makes sure she fully understands an issue before recommending what action she thinks appropriate. She expresses her positions and the reasons for them clearly and understandably, and is able Read More
