LWVNM: Observations On The Special Session

By The League Of Women Voters New Mexico:

During the last regular session of the Legislature, the League of Women Voters wrote a letter to the Speaker of the House expressing our appreciation for the open and transparent way that he conducted the business of the House. Agendas went up with as much notice as possible and most committee meetings were scheduled with plenty of notice and were usually held at the time posted. This made it much easier for citizens to participate in the legislative process.

Given our past praise for the Speaker, you can appreciate our dismay at the way the business of the Read More

Nobile: Why Am I Running For Probate Judge?

By Anne Nobile
Candidate for Probate Judge

Last winter I became aware there would be an opportunity to continue being of service to Los Alamos County in a capacity I would enjoy. With the encouragement of longtime friends and fellow volunteers, I soon applied.

I was appointed by the County Council June 21 for a term lasting until Dec. 31.

My letter of interest reviewed my experience as a paralegal, applying government regulations, such as OSHA and ANSI, in my job at the Lab and volunteering as a Planning & Zoning Commissioner for six years. I described additional volunteer work such as 13 years Read More

Sheehey: What I Have To Offer

By PETE SHEEHEY
Democratic Candidate for Re-Election to County Council

What do I have to offer the citizens of Los Alamos, if re-elected to County Council? I have learned a lot in my first term on Council, and worked for the things residents told me they wanted when I knocked on their doors four years ago: to go ahead with the most important investments for our future, but don’t spend too much, and make sure we get good value for taxpayers’ dollars. We went ahead with projects like the Teen Center, the Nature Center, and the new White Rock Library, Senior and Youth Centers, and we have still maintained Read More

Letter To The Editor: Sharon Stover Is Always Available For Her Community

By LAURA and RANDY ERICKSON
Los Alamos

We urge you to support Sharon Stover for House District 43 State Representative. We have worked with Sharon on the United Church’s Mexico Mission for years, and through that experience, we saw her dedication and leadership in action.

The Mexico Mission mobilizes volunteers from Los Alamos to build homes in a remote area in Mexico. There is no electricity in this area, and all the construction must be done manually. Over 140 homes have been completed in the past 30 years.

Sharon has participated in this effort many times. She has always been willing to help with Read More

Letter To The Editor: Los Alamos Needs Steven Girrens On Council

By RICK REISS
Los Alamos County Council Chair

Exciting times are coming for Los Alamos. Between changes in the management of the laboratory and implementation of the new Legacy Remediation campaigns, we find ourselves working hard at the state legislature and with the federal legislators and bureaucrats. A combination of skills is necessary to coordinate with state and federal legislators. I find the efforts in Washington to be important, difficult and demanding.

Councilor Steven Girrens has demonstrated keen awareness of issues and data while representing Los Alamos in Washington. Read More

Letter To The Editor: America Desperately Needs To Remove Establishment Politicians

By SHELLI MORGAN
Los Alamos

Americans have complained bitterly about career politicians for decades: Politicians lose touch with everyday Americans. Politicians who are proven corrupt receive little or no consequence. Politicians spend more time fundraising for themselves than doing their job. Politicians are driving our country into financial ruin. The political establishment is killing our country, and more importantly, they do not care about you at all! They care about their power!

But this election is different! We have a GENUINE outsider who is brawling against the
