Letter to the Editor: Charter Amendment #2 Would Give Council More Unrestrained Power

By MORRIS B. PONGRATZ
Former County Councilor

I would like to lend my voice to that of Anthony Amsden, John Arrowsmith, Robert Gibson, Wayne Hardie, Kevin Holsapple, Lawry Mann, Ken Milder, Gil Miranda, Chris Ortega, Felicia Orth, Ralph Phelps, Khal Spencer and others who have urged defeat of Charter Amendment #2.

I served on the 2009 Charter Review committee. In that committee former Utility Board member, Harry Ettinger, and I (a six-term member of the County Council) were asked to review the 1968 charter section on utilities and make any recommendations to the full committee.

UNM-LA CEO Urges Los Alamos To Vote For Bond C

By WYNN GOERING, CEO
UNM-Los Alamos

A colleague of mine at UNM recently told me that the upcoming election was “the most uninteresting” he could remember in all his years of observing New Mexico politics. It may be, if the polls are to be believed. But the University of New Mexico and its campus in Los Alamos will have a great deal at stake when voters cast their ballots between now and Nov. 4.

“Bond Question C,” of the state “2014 Capital Projects General Obligation Bond Act,” asks voters to accept or reject $141 million worth of funding for capital improvements to colleges and universities across Read More

Letter to the Editor: Support Library GO Bond Issue B

By JUDY CROCKER
Los Alamos

About seven bazillion ads and letters later, I’m hoping this is short enough (and absolutely important enough) to encourage Los Alamos County residents to support Library GO Bond Issue B on Nov. 4.

In this year’s annual library report, dependence on our library system was confirmed:

  • 16,718 registered users
  • 26,170 reference questions
  • 314,612 library visits (87% of county residents are users)
  • 21,191 program attendees
  • 26,898 public internet computers users

Any long-time resident knows our circulation is roughly 3x the national average. Both information and literacy Read More

Letter to the Editor: Managing Our Public Utilities Exponentially?

By KHALIL SPENCER
Los Alamos

The recent approval by the County Council of a contract that could eventually cost taxpayers nearly a quarter of a million dollars to pay for a bizarre and vague branding slogan (“Live Exponentially”) could not come at a worse time for those who wish to expand Council’s power over our Dept. of Public Utilities and its Board by voting to approve Charter Amendment 2.

I’ve heard good arguments from both sides of the discussion and have been undecided to some degree. Having said that, no one has convinced me that there is anything significantly
