By REBECCA RUTHERFORD

For the Los Alamos Daily Post

There are few modern purchases more comforting than a robot vacuum. You name it something cute (Mine is named “mega maid” iykyk). You watch it bonk into furniture. You pretend it is your hardworking little cleaning buddy. You fantasize about your cat riding around on it. Normal things.

Unfortunately, your hardworking little buddy may also be a mobile camera, microphone, and home mapping system waiting for a backend security mistake.

Which is exactly what happened recently, yikes!

Rickman: Promises, Credibility & North Mesa Open Space

By JIM RICKMAN
Los Alamos

I’ve read with interest all the hype and hullabaloo regarding the conversion of North Mesa open space into a bike park and other things. I’d like to offer one more perspective on the issue.

Back in May 2000, the National Park Service negligently ignited an uncontrolled inferno that incinerated the homes of some 400 Los Alamos families and forever altered the physical landscape of our community. Perhaps unbelievable to present-day citizens, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) was highly functioning and nonpartisan, and politicians of both major parties Read More

Supreme Court Affirms Conviction Of Albuquerque Man For Murder When He Was 17-Years-Old

NMSC News:

SANTA FE — The state Supreme Court Monday upheld the first-degree murder conviction of Ruben Benavidez for fatally shooting his mother’s boyfriend in 2022 in Albuquerque.

In a unanimous opinion written by Justice Julie J. Vargas, the Court rejected Benavidez’s arguments there was insufficient evidence that he had the necessary criminal intent for willful and deliberate murder. Benavidez contended that he did not deliberately kill Cedric Guzman but instead he was provoked.

The Court set aside one of Benavidez’s two convictions for evidence tampering as a violation of constitutional Read More

Los Alamos National Laboratory might be the only large scientific institution where it’s possible to do world-class science in the morning, ski powder at lunch, and be back in the office for a two o’clock meeting. One crisp and snowy January morning, this point wasn’t lost on three Lab managers and volunteer ski patrollers—Katie Higgins, Hans Herrmann, and Eric Brown. They were lounging inside Pajarito Mountain’s patrol shack, waiting Read More
