New Mexico Environment Department Warns Of Harmful Algae Blooms In Charette, Clayton, Maloya Lakes

NMED News:

COLFAX AND UNION Counties — The the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) is urging visitors to Charette Lake, Clayton Lake, and Lake Maloya in Northern New Mexico to use caution due to the formation of harmful algae blooms.

Samples collected by NMED from these three lakes show that harmful algae blooms are present.

NMED is urging visitors to take the following precautions: 

  • As always, do not drink untreated surface water;
  • Avoid swimming in algae blooms;
  • Rinse fish with clean water thoroughly before cooking, eat only the fillet portion;
  • Keep pets and livestock out of the water

State Awards $2.2M To Connect 22,000 Youth To Outdoors

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Economic Development Department (EDD) awarded $2,178,029 through its Outdoor Equity Fund to 61 programs that will provide outdoor education and career training to more than 22,000 youth across the state, with a special emphasis on low-income families and Tribal communities.

County: 37th Street & Piñon Park Playgrounds Closed For Safety During Renovation Work

Paul Geimer was the best predictor in Atomic City Road Runner’s (ACRR) final pace race of the 51st season held Tuesday on the Canyon Rim Trail. He was 21 seconds off his predicted time as well as the first finisher on the 3-mile course at 18:39.

SFNF & USDA Call Laguna Wildfire 100 Percent Contained

SFNF News:

SANTA FE — A recent fixed wing flight with an infrared (IR) camera detected no heat within the Laguna Wildfire perimeter.

USDA Forest Service Fire Managers from the Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) have called the Laguna Wildfire 100 percent contained.

This announcement means the wildfire poses no risk of spreading.

There are no closures, but the public is urged to exercise caution when traveling within this burned area.

Hazards exist, including:

  • Dead standing trees; and
  • Potential for flash flooding even in areas not directly affected by the wildfire.

Visitor Spending For Manhattan Project National Historical Park Contributes $5.4 Million Across Three Communities

DENVER – A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows Manhattan Project National Historical Park had a total of 74,693 recreation visits across its three park units in 2024.

These visits led to a total of approximately $5.4 million in visitor spending in local communities parkwide.

The numbers per site are as follows:

  • Hanford, Wash. – 19,644 visits; $773,000 in visitor spending;
  • Los Alamos, N.M. – 25,538 visits; $1.8 million in visitor spending; and
  • Oak Ridge, Tenn. – 29,511 visits; $2.8

Kokanee salmon snagging season opens Wednesday at Navajo Lake, El Vado Lake and Eagle Nest Lake.

Kokanee are a landlocked species of sockeye salmon that spend their entire lives in freshwater and do not migrate to the ocean. Like other species of Pacific salmon, they live for 3-4 years, then spawn. After spawning, they die. 

In order to make use of the salmon, a special snagging season is established to allow anglers a chance to harvest the fish before they die using nontraditional methods. The most common way of catching them is by snagging. Read More
