AWF Conducts Ecological Restoration at Valles Caldera July 25-27

AWF News:

Albuquerque Wildlife Federation (AWF) and Amigos de Valles Caldera are hosting a weekend-long volunteer project and group campout in the National Preserve.

Volunteers from both groups will be coordinating with ecological restoration specialists to improve integrity of streams and wetlands in the preserve via rock structures, fencing, and planting of native species.

A popular local hike is to start at the Las Conchas trailhead and proceed to where the trail turns away from the river (about two miles), then wade/splash down the river rather than follow the trail.

Dangerous Conditions Exist For Cliff Jumping At East Fork

Jumping from the cliff at East Fork of the Jemez River cannot be done at this time because the  water level is just 2-feet deep.

The water used to be 15 feet deep at this location in the Jemez and cliff jumping was a popular thrill before the recent fires caused the steep canyon to fill in with dirt. Read More

Storytelling Highlights Valles Caldera Birthday

The Valles Caldera National Preserve will host the Jemez Mountains Storytelling Jamboree 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., July 26 at the Valle Grande staging area located just inside the Preserve’s main entrance.

There is no admission charge to attend the jamboree, so bring your family and friends for a day of fun and entertainment by some of the area’s most talented storytellers.

LANL Reminder: Use Official Trails When Biking and Hiking

Trails opened last year at TA-70 and TA-71 south of White Rock for recreational purposes may be closed if users continue to stray off of the official trails.

“We want people to use and enjoy these areas, but it’s important to stay on the designated trails to protect wildlife, archaeological sites and other trail users,” said Environmental Planner Dan Pava, chair of the Trails Working Group.

Aquatic Center HVAC & Boiler Replacement Begins Mid-August

COUNTY News:

The Larry Walkup Aquatic Center will close to the public at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15 until mid-November for a project to replace the HVAC system and boilers. 

The project will begin Aug. 18 immediately after the 40th Annual Triathlon, when the Aquatic Center normally closes two weeks for annual maintenance. All of the affected groups have been informed of this closure as early as the fall of 2013.

The purpose of the project is to replace the pool boilers and HVAC system, which are at the end of their expected life and install more energy efficient systems.

Chick Keller Leads Wildflower Walk July 18

The Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) Jemez Mountain Herbarium curator, Chick Keller, will lead another Wildflower Walk at 5:15 p.m., Friday, July 18.

The Wildflower Walks occur monthly and are easy walks to identify some of the wildflower beauties found in and around Los Alamos. Each month Keller picks a different trail, depending on what is blooming at the time. The walks are free and there is no advance registration required.

The Northern New Mexico Radio Controlled Car Club has announced the results of  the races held Saturday and Sunday at the three-day Border Wars racing series.

The event attraced racers from four states to the Overlook Park Track in White Rock.

Camp Corazones, an annual three-day summer camp for children and families infrected or impacted by HIV/AIDS, is in urgent need of certified lifeguards to volunteer and supervise pool time Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18.
