Valles Caldera Trustees Hold Public Meeting in Los Alamos July 11

The Valles Caldera Board of Trustees will conduct a public meeting 6-9 p.m., Friday, July 11 in Los Alamos at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, 60 Entrada Dr.

The agenda includes an update on public access and use, planning, a review of post-fire conditions, and the introduction of new executive director, Jorge Silva-Bañuelos. Silva-Bañuelos was named to the post May 28 after the Board completed a nationwide search. He fills the vacancy created when Dennis Trujillo retired in January.

YMCA’s July 4th Kids’ Parade 10 a.m. at Ashley Pond

YMCA News:

Children who want to participate in the annual Family YMCA July 4th Kids’ Parade should meet at 10 a.m., at “the elephant” at Ashley Pond.

The Parade begins at 11 a.m. and will take the route of:

  • East on Central to 20th Street; turn left.
  • Follow 20th Street around Fuller Lodge and down Bathtub Row to Nectar. Turn Right.
  • Follow Nectar to 15th Street; turn Right.
  • End at the YMCA at 15th Street and Iris.

YMCA 5k ‘Firecracker’ Fun Run Friday

YMCA News:

The Los Alamos Family YMCA will host its annual Firecracker 5K Fun Run from 8-10 a.m., July 4, at the YMCA, 1450 Iris St.

Prizes will go to the top runner in each category. All participants get a t-shirt and are eligible for many great door prizes from local businesses.

Run, jog, or walk the race, then stick around for free food, games and at 11 a.m., the children’s parade.

The annual YMCA Firecracker 5K Fun Run is made possible by generous sponsorships from Los Alamos National Bank and Los Alamos Medical Center.

United Way Launches ‘Born Learning Trail’ to Promote Early Childhood Learning, Family Fun

Learning happens everywhere a child goes, but parents, grandparents and caregivers may not always know how to support that learning.

All that changed when United Way of Northern New Mexico (UWNNM), Los Alamos County, Metzger’s “Do It Best” and the YMCA “YES” Corp, along with community volunteers, came together to create an outdoor early-learning trail at Urban Park to help adults turn excursions with young children into fun, interactive learning moments. Tuesday night’s Atomic City Roadrunners Pace Race was held in the Quemazon and Pipeline Road areas on steep 1, 3 and 3.2 mile courses. With all 33 predicted and actual runner times adjusted to the 3.2 mile course, the best predictions were by Mariela Saenz (13 sec.), Meera Nadige (22 sec.), Linda Vance (23 sec.) and Katie Gattiker (41 sec.).

Visit Elk Herds in the Valles Caldera With PEEC

One of the many Take Wing events that Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC) is offering exclusively to those who donate $150 or more to its capital campaign, is sure to delight.

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 26 a small group, limited to 10 people, will explore the Valles Caldera by van, getting up close to the resident elk.

PEEC is raising roughly $1 million through the capital campaign to fund indoor and outdoor exhibits for the new Los Alamos County Nature Center, slated to open in spring 2015.
