K2 Women’s Weekend Raises Funds for Cancer Services

PAJARITO WOMEN News:

The sixth annual K2 Women’s Weekend at Pajarito Mountain is a non-profit event that raises funds for breast and cervical cancer services in New Mexico by bringing women together to improve their snowsports skills and have fun.

All abilities encouraged. The event is Feb. 7-9. Registration closes Jan. 23.

Last year, more than $10,000 was raised to provide financial assistance for breast and cervical cancer services incurred by New Mexican women and men.

Los Alamos County Ice Rink Presents Skate with Santa and Elves Dec. 14-15

Santa Clause is coming to the ice rink and taking time during his busy holiday schedule to bring his elves to help him greet boys and girls and hand out candy canes. Santa and his elves will pose for pictures on and off the ice.

Come visit Santa and his elves 4-6 p.m., Saturday Dec. 14 and 3-5 p.m. Sunday Dec. 15. Admission for the event is $6.50 at the door, $2.50 for children under 5. Admission includes skate rental. Passes will not be accepted for this special event.

TRIATOMICS News:

The Los Alamos Triatomics Club 2013 Christmas Lights Runs begin Dec. 2. Here’s an opportunity to check out the Christmas lights around town and get in a little exercise to burn off that extra slice of Thanksgiving pie.

Runners will wind through Los Alamos neighborhoods to check out the holiday lights. The routes are mostly on quiet residential streets to avoid the noise and smell of traffic. Non club members are welcome to join in the runs, which are scheduled every Monday and Wednesday night until Christmas or there are ice patches on the streets.

Pajarito Mountain Edges Closer to Opening

PAJARITO MOUNTAIN News:

Pajarito Mountain received about five inches of snow Sunday, which totals about a foot out of the recent storm. Over the weekend, Manager Tom Long and his staff have been track packing the area and evaluating the conditions. They will begin tilling and grooming if enough snow exists to support that activity.

They will begin making snow now to cover some thin places. There is not quite enough snow to open, but it’s getting close.

Los Alamos Golf Course Parking Lot Re-opens

The Los Alamos Golf Course parking lot has re-opened. To get to the golf shop once you’ve parked your car, walk toward the 9th green (located on the east end of the parking lot) then follow the signs around the building to the entrance. 

The driving range will close down for a few days beginning as contractors begin work on the new drainage line. The weather may delay this process so there may be days the range will be open.

Cut Your Own or Buy One: Christmas Tree Sales Begin Friday at Valles Caldera

JEMEZ SPRINGS—Beginning the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, Nov. 29 through Dec. 24, visitors to the Valles Caldera National Preserve can either cut their own Christmas tree or purchase a precut tree while supplies last.

Tree cutting permits and precut trees will be sold 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday through Sunday at the Valle Grande Staging Area (VGSA.) Visitors can cut their own trees for a permit fee of $10. A map and directions to the cutting area will be provided with your permit. Once you obtain a permit, be prepared to drive an additional 12 miles to the cutting area. Read More
