Bandelier Superintendent Jason Lott announced that, in concert with the re-opening of other public lands in the area, the restrictions at the park due to high fire danger will be lowered to Level I this weekend.

 As of 8 a.m. Friday, campfires will be permitted in the fire grills in Juniper Campground. The campground and all the park trails have been open all along, including overnight backpacking in the Bandelier Wilderness.

The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the Ninth Annual High Mountain Mudfest Mud Volleyball Tournament Saturday, July 20 at the North Mesa Mud Pits.

The tournament is Adult Coed Competitive with games starting at 9 a.m. Teams must have 6-12 players who are 18 and older with at least four women per team. The cost is $130 per team and the deadline for registration is 5 p.m. Thursday, July 18.

Bandelier Offers Ranger-Guided Walks at Tsankawi

Bandelier National Monument will be offering ranger-guided evening walks at the park’s Tsankawi section 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Water, sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing for cool weather or a possible rain shower are recommended.  

Participants will have the opportunity to view petroglyphs and cavates, while hearing the story of the Ancestral Pueblo people who occupied Tsankawi’s mesas and canyons. Read More

Forest Remains Closed This Weekend

SANTA FE—“The Santa Fe National Forest will remain closed to public access through the Fourth of July weekend,” Forest Supervisor Maria Garcia said.

The isolated rain showers received over the past week have helped to reduce fire danger and forest officials are considering which parts of the Santa Fe National Forest will be safe to open next week.

“Rainfall and a decrease in fires, does not mean the forest will reopen unless all conditions are safe,” she added.

Bandelier Weekly Nightwalks in Frijoles Canyon Begin July 5

Starting Friday, July 5, Bandelier National Monument will be offering the popular Nightwalks each week (weather permitting) until the end of August.

The annual Splash ‘n Dash series began June 26 as a training event for the Los Alamos Triathlon, which occurs Aug. 17.

Splash ‘n Dash will occur every other Wednesday leading up to the Los Alamos Triathlon.

New this year is an even shorter course for the youngest athletes – a 100-yard swim followed by a quick run along the Canyon Road sidewalk.

Meet New Born Goats at PEEC July 2

Come to PEEC Tuesday, July 2 for your chance to meet week-old goats. Both Los Alamos and the Jemez are home to goat farms, and their owners will be at PEEC with some new borns.

This program is part of PEEC’s Summer Family Evenings and is free to PEEC members and just $5 per family for non-members. Drop in any time between 6:30-8 p.m.

Jessie Ross of Gypsy Mountain Ranch, and Debbie Wood of Second Bloom Farm will bring mom and baby goats to PEEC. Some of the babies were born June 23, making them just a week and a day old on the night of the program.  Read More
